SPRING VALLEY – The story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection unfolded before the eyes of the audience at the Spring Valley Stagehands theater the past two weekends, bringing Christ’s story to life as Christians prepare to begin Holy Week.
Director Luke Hayes brought the show back for a second year due to popular demand. About five years ago, Hayes had a nagging feeling that he needed to produce the “Passion of Christ.” It was a voice in his head that just wouldn’t go away. So, he gave in.
The production was so popular last year that he decided to bring it back for a second year. About two-thirds of last year’s cast agreed to return, with some newcomers coming on board. The North Heights Church costumed the entire play and provided props, relieving a huge burden for the Stagehands, who are a nonprofit community theatre entirely run by volunteers. This year they are celebrating their 41st year.
Hayes told the audience before the play that he hoped they would find special meaning in it.
Theatre repair
The Stagehands recently learned that the theatre’s two main auditorium furnace/AC units are in need of replacing. One of the units, estimated to be 20-30 years old, failed last summer and is unrepairable. Since the units are housed on the building’s roof, it’s more cost effective to replace them both at the same time since a crane will need to be used. The project is estimated to cost about $32,000.
They have received a $5,000 from the St. Croix Valley Foundation and Wisconsin Arts Board; they also have some money set aside in saving but they need to raise an additional $15,000 to cover the project. To donate, visit svstagehands.org
