Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center at Freedom Park nominated for Destination of the Year Award

Posted

Recently the Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center at Freedom Park was honored with a nomination for the Wisconsin Outdoor Recreation Departments “Destination of the Year Award.” This award recognizes those organizations that contribute to tourism, education, conservation, and community engagement along Wisconsin's Great River Road.

Board of Directors Chair Jared Schmitz and Executive Director Linda Schenk traveled to Madison to attend the awards ceremony held at the Governor’s Executive Residence. While the center did not receive the title of Destination of the Year, we were happy to have spent the time among some of the amazing leaders in our industry. We were honored to have participated and been able to talk with Gov. Tony Evers.

Even though we did not receive the award itself, the nomination reflects the dedication of our volunteers, board members, partners, sponsors, and supporters who have worked tirelessly to make Freedom Park a place where people can connect with nature, experience educational classes, and spend time with one another.

The center offers free admission and features interactive exhibits exploring the region's Indigenous heritage, river ecology, transportation history, and the significance of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. Visitors also enjoy pollinator gardens, scenic overlooks, educational programming, birdwatching opportunities, a rotating fine art gallery, and access to National Park Service passport stamps.

As a partner site with the National Park Service, an Audubon Birding Site on the Great River Road Birding Trail, and a designated Watchable Wildlife Site, the center serves as both an educational resource and a memorable destination for families, students, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers.

Each year, the Visitor & Learning Center hosts dozens of educational programs, community events, art exhibitions, and special celebrations that enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike. Recent enhancements, including refreshed exhibits, expanded educational experiences, and ongoing habitat restoration projects, continue to strengthen the center's role as a premier destination on Wisconsin's Great River Road.

Visitors are invited to experience our Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center for themselves by exploring the beautiful bluff-top park, interactive learning center, walking trails, gardens, art installations, and breathtaking views where two great rivers meet.
