The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2025 Principal Leadership Awards, recognizing exceptional school administrators across Wisconsin. Among the 14 honorees statewide is Michael Kosmalski, Principal of Prescott Intermediate School and Director of Teaching and Learning for the Prescott School District (PSD).

This prestigious award celebrates educational leaders for their outstanding leadership, dedication to student success, and unwavering commitment to excellence in education.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this award, but this recognition would not be possible without the people who have supported, guided, challenged, and believed in me along the way. This recognition is a reflection of a collective effort, and I am honored to be on this journey with so many amazing individuals,” said Kosmalski.

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has been honoring exemplary Wisconsin educators annually since 1990. Principal Leadership Award recipients are selected for their efforts in setting high standards for academic achievement, instruction, and character, while cultivating a positive and impactful school culture. As part of the award, Prescott Intermediate School will receive a $6,000 grant to support student learning and school initiatives.

Kosmalski came to Prescott in 2004 as a science teacher and quickly became an integral leader within the PSD community. He served on numerous school committees, coached basketball and softball, was elected to the Prescott City Council, and was a longtime volunteer Hunter Education instructor. During his time in the classroom, he pursued advanced degrees, earning a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from UW–River Falls and superintendent credentials from the University of Minnesota.

In 2016, he transitioned to the role of Director of Teaching and Learning, overseeing curriculum development, district and state assessments, professional development, and grant initiatives. Since 2020, he has also served as Principal of Prescott Intermediate School. He was instrumental in developing the district’s K–8 STEM program, visible learning vision, and building thinking classroom practices.

“Mr. Kosmalski is a colleague who keeps the best interests of students and educators at the forefront of every discussion. Prescott School District’s future and the field of education are in great hands based on the investment and engagement of great leaders such as Michael Kosmalski,” said Superintendent Dr. Rick Spicuzza.

Kosmalski is only the seventh administrator from CESA 11 to receive the Principal Leadership Award. A full list of this year’s recipients can be found at: bit.ly/4iedEdP.
