In August, the Gilder Lehrman Institute honored Prescott High School teacher, Jeff Ryan, as the State of Wisconsin History Teacher of the Year. Ryan has since been selected as one of the 12 finalists for the National History Teacher of the Year running. A panel of judges is currently reviewing all finalist applications to choose the 2020 National History Teacher of the Year.
These educators were chosen from 51 exceptional 2020 State History Teachers of the Year for their innovative methods of bringing history to life for their students using historic documents and artifacts, field trips, demonstrations, and handson projects.
Ryan has been instrumental in bringing high school students to the Lac Du Flambeau Indian Reservation to learn about the history and culture of this northern Wisconsin tribal community. Participants spend four days on the reservation meeting with tribal elders, visiting and touring important historical and cultural sites, and participating in workshops, discussions, and forums in order to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for Wisconsin’s native people. Since the inception of this project almost two decades ago, 309 Prescott High School students have traveled to Lac Du Flambeau and shared their experiences with classmates, teachers, family, and countless community members.
“I believe there is no greater classroom than for students to experience another culture firsthand,” stated Ryan. Students have shared and presented their unique learning experiences at local and area schools, several Wisconsin and Minnesota universities, and dozens of conferences at the local, state, and national level.
Each state convenes a committee to evaluate the award materials. Committee members may include history educators, professors, former state winners, and education professionals. The 2020 National History Teacher of the Year will be announced in September.
