In Loving Memory of Joyce Arlene Johnson

Joyce Arlene Johnson completed her earthly journey at the age of 97 on Nov. 10, 2023, at Ellsworth Care Center. Born on April 1, 1926, in the township of Martell, she was the cherished daughter of Fritz and Lillian (Gilbertson) Nelson.

Joyce’s early years were marked by education at Martell School, later continuing her studies at Morton Corner School. Fate intertwined her path with that of Kenneth Johnson, and on Dec. 7, 1946, they exchanged vows, embarking on a remarkable journey that spanned 57 years until Kenneth’s peaceful passing in 2003. Together, they were blessed with the gift of six children: Beverly, Duane, Linda, Rick, Dennis, and Steve.

Raised on the family farm in Martell, Joyce’s roots ran deep, and she continued to live a fulfilling life in Ellsworth and on County Road KK. A longtime member of Bethel Covenant, Joyce took pride in being one of the church’s oldest members, exemplifying unwavering faith throughout her life. She was also a very dedicated member of the church quilting club.

With a diverse professional journey spanning housekeeping, and roles at the Ellsworth bakery, Joyce’s work ethic and adaptability shone brightly. An avid seeker of treasures, she cherished the thrill of garage sales. For Joyce, Saturdays were for garage sales, and Sundays were devoted to church — a testament to her unique and vibrant spirit. Joyce leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of her children: Beverly (Ken) Prichard, Duane (Leona) Johnson, Linda (Wylen) Morgan, Rick (Mary) Johnson, Steve (Audrey) Johnson, and Joannie Johnson (daughter-in-law). Her legacy extends through her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Johnson, parents Fritz and Lillian Nelson, son Dennis Johnson, son-in-law Ken Prichard, grandson Franklin Prichard, and granddaughter Carrie Prichard. Joyce joins her siblings Howard Nelson, Esther Lundgaard, and sister-in-law Darla Nelson in the embrace of eternal rest.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at Bethel Covenant Church (W8405 County Rd KK, Ellsworth, WI 54011), preceded by a visitation starting at 10 a.m. The journey will conclude with burial at Bethel Covenant Cemetery.

The family entrusts the arrangements to O’Connell Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Ellsworth. For further details, please visit www.oconnellfuneralhomes.com or contact 715-273-4421.
