PRESCOTT – "Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day, the kids are out there fishing and soon all will be weighed." Fun was had by all at the 26th annual Prescott Kiwanis Fishing contest on Saturday, July 8!

The young anglers and their friends came early for the best fishing spots. Fifty kids, including anglers from Lakeville, Hammond and New Richmond participated. It was great seeing the kids bringing their fish to be weighed with lots of smiles. Plop, plop, plop went the bobbers in the water from 9-11 a.m.

The Boy Scouts sold hot dogs and refreshments. Thank you, Boy Scouts, for your participation the past 26 years! Our weigh-in team of John Korabeck, Lori Schmitt, and Peg Jacques have also been with us for 26 years. Thank you, friends! Jason Brazzale and his Prescott High School Fishing Team held a fishing clinic. Everyone was given a fishing shirt. All fish were weighed with 27 total caught. The 5-8-year-old age group caught the most. Our newest sponsor, Kasco, donated fishing poles and tackle boxes for first and second places in each age group.

The winners were as follows:

  • Ages 4 and under: First place, Emmitt Thoen with a 9 1/8 oz sunfish; second place, Ollie Klassen with a 2 3/8 oz sunfish
  • Ages 5-8: First place, Oliver Schminch with a 1-pound, 6.5-ouncen; second place Harvey Klassen, with a 4 5/8 oz rock bass
  • Ages 9-12: First place, Elazar Haas with a 2-pound, 7.5-ounce small mouth bass; second place, Caron Andryski with a 14.5-ounce large mouth bass
  • Ages 13 and up: First and second place, Gabby Rose with a 6-ounce and 3-ounce sunfish.

Prizes were handed out to each young fisher person. The very popular adult drawing for families and friends also took place.

We would like to thank our sponsors: Jeremy at Edward Jones for providing treat bags for the young anglers, Great Rivers Printing, Pierce County Journal, Kasco, and the Prescott High School Fishing Team.

Thank you to those who donated for our adult drawing: Prescott Family Dental, Scenic Bluffs Dental, Ptacek's, Croix Insurance, Noah Insurance, Kitchen Table, Bohdi Studios, Philanders Grill & Bar, First National Bank, Freedom Park, No Name Saloon, Scab's Place, River City Stitch, St. Croix Interiors, and Heywood, Cari and Anderson.

Thank you to all young anglers, families, and friends for making this contest so successful over the years! We will see you next year on the first Saturday of June (hopefully, no flooding and rescheduling). Make it a great day and have a fun and safe summer! Keep fishing!
