A Minnesota man was believed to have been intoxicated when causing a two-vehicle crash on State Road 35 in Diamond Bluff Township.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a two-vehicle crash on State Road 35 and 1005th St., Hager City, at 2:33 a.m. Saturday.
It was determined that a 2020 Mazda CX5 was traveling northbound on State Road 35. That vehicle was operated by Mohamed Shambolia, 42, from Minneapolis. Shambolia had a passenger, 36-year-old Affan Irfan from Lakeville, MN.
A 2004 Saturn Vue was traveling southbound on State Road 35 being operated by Richard Wadena 52, Newport, MN. Wadena reportedly drove left of center and into the northbound lane and struck the Shambolia vehicle. Shambolia was transported from the scene by Red Wing Ambulance Service to Mayo Hospital in Red Wing, MN with undetermined injuries. Irfan was uninjured in the crash.
Wadena was uninjured in the crash and subsequently arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Ellsworth Fire Department, Red Wing Fire Department and Ambulance Service. The crash remains under investigation by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
