To the Editor: In the February 25 edition of the Journal, Senator Smith said growing marijuana is going to save some small Wisconsin farms. I am not surprised at the lack of thought and research by some politicians after being elected. It’s not the lack of choice for crops to grow that is causing the reduction in farms. There are a host of reasons such as fiscal mismanagement, larger farms buying up smaller farms, other farmers retiring without passing on the business, long hours, mortgages, etc.
Then, to believe that if Wisconsin legalized recreational marijuana, the state budget would have millions in cash coming in thru tax money on it is political daydreaming! California legalized recreational marijuana and counted on a cash windfall but found out that black market pot was sold cheaper and expanded their market. So, with black market weed selling cheaper, California made less money and couldn’t regulate safety for all users. The pushers were still free to “lace” it with whatever they wanted.
So the police still have to go after black market pot in California and that may be true in other states or in Wisconsin if it was legalized. Local enforcement would change but still be needed.
If Senator Smith and Smokin’ Tony want to smoke pot, they can take a two-week vacation in a nearby state and drive down their roads when they are high.
There is more to life than smoking DOPE!
