Longtime Hastings resident MaryJanice Davidson’s new book hits close to home.

MaryJanice Davidson is a New York Times best-selling author. She likes to set her fiction where her heart is, in the Midwest.

Her newest book, “Road Queens," hits shelves Nov. 28, and its setting is right across the river in Prescott.

“I’ve always loved Minnesota and Wisconsin,” Davidson explained. “And it cuts down on research time if I have characters meet at Muddy Waters in Prescott, get ice cream at School House Square in Hastings or stay at the Port of Prescott Hotel.”

"Road Queens" is the story of three women who bonded over rescuing survivors of domestic violence. But when a mission backfires in tragedy, the bikers turn their backs on their ride-or-die friendship. Years later, Amanda, Sidney, and Cassandra are brought together by the same thing that tore them apart: the man who beat his wife is murdered, and all signs point to Cassandra. The trio reluctantly get the band back together, if only to shut and barricade the door to their past once and for all. Despite reservations, regrets, and blossoming romance, it’s time for these biker babes to strap on their helmets and hit the road—before the real murderer can run them off it.
Readers are calling "Road Queens" “Sex and the City meets Sons of Anarchy,” and Davidson admits she gets a kick out of the comparison.

Some of the subject matter is grim, but Davidson deftly juggles the seriousness of the topic with humor and romance.

“Researching this book was both joy and heartbreak. And I’m in favor of anything that gets people talking. One of the things that surprised me was just how many resources there are for DV survivors. Help is out there. You don’t have to be alone. If readers come away with just that, it’s time and money well spent,” she said.

Davidson includes a list of domestic violence charities and resources at the end of her book and will donate 10% of her royalties to Lifewire and Women’s Advocates.  
"Road Queens" will be available in paperback, Kindle, and audio on Nov. 28. Members of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited Program can get it for free. Davidson hopes to write a sequel but says that’s entirely up to the readers.
