Elmwood/Plum City softball has won four out of its last seven, and it is no secret how. The Wolves are 5-1 this season when scoring 10-plus runs and 0-6 when they have not. The bats have been electric in the wins thus far, helping EPC to a 4-5 Dunn-St. Croix Conference record.
“When our players are comfortable with the pitching that they’re seeing, they’re confident in their hitting,” Coach Liz Hauser said.
Hauser said the team is hitting well with two outs, not letting up for the entirety of games and the whole lineup is having their moments.
On the other hand, against top-of-the-line pitching, the Wolves have struggled at times. EPC has scored a single run or been shut out by Durand-Arkansaw twice, Spring Valley, Boyceville and Colfax. Hauser said the team is going to use a light game week to build confidence in facing cream of the crop pitching
Brittany Bechel has led a trio of batting destruction for the Wolves, along with Hannah Fesenmaier and Aspen Hines. Bechel has 14 hits, including three home runs, two triples and two doubles. She leads the team in runs batted in with 11 and is hitting .350.
“She is a confident hitter. She is strong. She works hard in the weight room,” Hauser said.
Fesenmaier and Hines are also holding their own, with a combined 25 hits and eight extra-base hits.
The focus now is on the defensive side of the ball. While there have been some spectacular plays all around, the consistency needs to be built up to hold off some of these teams at the top of the Dunn-St. Croix.
“I want to see us eliminating some errors. We have some really good work in the field. They’re making some really good plays, but we still have some more errors than I’d like to see.”
EPC has a list of conference games coming up, including a rematch against rival Spring Valley on May 11 at home.
