The Panthers of Ellsworth have posted wins in consecutive weeks to set in motion the 2021 season. After traveling north to the state border for the first game at Superior, Ellsworth traveled south to West Salem to take on another one-win Panther.
Senior running back Ashten Quade put the first points on the board with a four-yard run with eight minutes left to play in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead after an unsuccessful two-point conversion run.
West Salem proved to be rigid. Neither team added points to the board until an interception was returned for a touchdown by the home team to take a 7-6 lead while the clock read 4:15 to play in the half.
Less than two minutes later, senior back Max Grand punched in a three-yard carry. An incomplete pass on the conversion left the score at 12-7 in favor of Ellsworth. To keep the two-minute theme alive, Grand took a pass from senior quarterback Jack Janke for a 31-yard score before taking the conversion into the promised land on foot. After West Salem led 7-6 just four minutes prior, the purple Panthers comfortably left the field at the break with a 20-7 edge.
West Salem scored the only points in the second half to make Ellsworth last Friday night’s victors, 20-14.
Quade led all players on the ground and through the air, recording 60 yards by land on five carries and 47 yards by sky. Janke finished with 97 yards on six throws. Ellsworth finished with 179 yards of total offense and held West Salem to under 100 yards of cumulative offense.
This week, Ellsworth travels to Baldwin-Woodville for their MBC opener. Both teams started the season on a winning note, but only one can remain unbeaten. In the season opener, the Blackhawks posted a 17-6 victory when they hosted the much larger Sparta, who competes in Division 3, before confidently winning on the road at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau.
