Staff report
They put together a concerted effort, but in the end the Ellsworth Panthers varsity baseball team fell to the Amery Warriors in the June 10 WIAA Regional game at Amery, the final score coming to 8 – 4.
Of all seven innings, number 5 was the most consequential for the game’s outcome, as the Warriors took away six runs with zero for the Panthers’ same inning, effectively deciding things in Amery’s favor.
The June 10 away game in Warrior territory began rather inauspiciously, with neither Ellsworth or Amery scoring in the first inning. That all changed in the second, with the Panthers getting one run in followed by two more in the third, being matched by Amery with two runs of its own to leave the score at 3 – 2 in Ellsworth’s favor.
Neither the Panthers nor the Warriors scored in the fourth or sixth inning, while six runs for Amery in the fifth served to flip the board score to 8 – 3, in Amery’s favor. A single run in the seventh inning was not enough to turn things around for the Panthers.
Among those contributing to the team effort on the part of the Panthers varsity was Jack Voelker with two hits and two runs in three at bats, while Anthony Madsen got a run in as well.
As to Panther hits, Chase Snyder got off a hit and a run, while Urban Broadway got a hit and Tanner Pechaek batted a run in, along with one by Ian Matzek.
Anthony Madsen got two ‘base on ball’ events, along with one for Ian Matzek, two for Chase Snyder, and one other walk.
All told the Ellsworth Panthers got 24 at bats to 27 for the Amery Warriors in the June 10 away game, while Amery made 11 hits to just seven for the Panthers. The Warriors also batted in substantially more runs, at a ratio of 7 to 2. With just two ‘base on ball’ events to six for the Panthers, Amery came away June 10 with five strikeouts to seven for Ellsworth. The win by Amery means that the Panthers season is over for this year.
