The Pierce County Historical Association is excited to launch its first (of hopefully many) history walking cemetery tour at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Rock Elm’s Poplar Hill Cemetery.
A guide will walk the group through the cemetery, sharing details of Rock Elm area's early settlers, including stories of the Ingalls family, pioneer stories in their own words, some tragedy, and a bit of local mayhem, said volunteer Julie Huebel.
Tour admission is $20/person. Proceeds are going to help fund the maintenance of the early settlers’ graves by the Rock Elm Old Settler’s Club. Purchase your tickets in advance from at piercecountyhistorical.org or RSVP to jhuebel@piercecountyhistorical.org to save your spot and pay with cash at the event.
The tour involves 60-90 minutes of walking/standing. Attendees should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to check-in.
Elmwood office
In other exciting news, the PCHA signed a lease for a building in Elmwood at 110 S. Main St., Huebel announced in early September.
“We will be opening this as a satellite office to our main one in Bay City,” Huebel said. “We feel this will allow us to better serve the community in terms of proximity to their areas and it will also allow us to tap into a wider network of volunteers. Additionally, we were in dire need of more space to house our collections and the eastern side of the county provided the most economical option for our
organization.”
The plan is to be open on Thursdays once the office is set up. If you or your business is interested in donating towards the costs of storage, displays, and new computers, reach out or donate online.
