MARSHFIELD — A year ago, a River Falls gymnastics squad called themselves “The Lucky Seven” for the seven gymnasts on the team. They scored a 136.300 at Sectionals to secure a State bid. This year, “The Perfect 10” with, you guessed it, 10 gymnasts on the team followed suit.
This year, the Wildcats’ score took a big step up to 138.725, trailing only Marshfield’s 142.175 in a field of eight teams.
Sophomore Ruby Amundson, who recently broke the school bars record with a 9.650, won the all-around competition with a 36.875, finishing just above Marshfield’s Jazlyn Kurth with a 36.850. Amundson dominated vault with a 9.525 first place finish, took second behind Kurth in bars with an 8.950, took fourth in beam with an 8.950 and won floor with a 9.450. The massive day landed Amundson Individual State spots in all-around, beam, bar, vault and floor, each of the individual competition categories.
Fellow sophomore Bella Franklin will join Amundson at State individually, finishing second narrowly to Amundson with a 9.400. Franklin’s ninth place all-around finish was not enough for State all-around qualification, but a top 10 Sectionals finish is an accomplishment regardless. Junior Tirfe L’Allier made State on floor with a third-place finish, scoring a 9.000.
While State is always a massive achievement, it is nothing new for the trio, as the three were the exact three Individual State competitors representing River Falls a year ago. As none of them are seniors, they could very well be the three that represent the district once again a year from now.
State is March 6-7 at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Fieldhouse. Team competition is March 6 followed by individual competition March 7.
