The Elmwood Crain-Ottman American Legion Post 207 and Auxiliary Unit began their Memorial Day Honor Services bright and early at 8:15 a.m. May 29 with their first stop at the Hatchville St. John’s Cemetery to pay tribute to the veterans interned there.

From there it was on to Oak Ridge, Spring Lake, Sacred Heart, Old Rock Elm and Poplar Hill cemeteries for Honor Services with a final stop at the Elmwood Welcome Home Assisted Living facility to do a program for all the veterans living there.

From there it was on to Veterans Memorial Park in Elmwood for the annual Memorial Day program. Out-going Commander Jim Baier welcomed everyone and began the ceremony with the changing of the American Flag by Dale Place and Sgt. Logan Butler.

Fifty-two-year Legion Member Gregory Baskin spoke to attendees about the origins of Memorial Day and told stories about his family’s long time military service.

The second speaker at Elmwood’s Memorial Day program was Sgt. Logan Butler, great-grandson of the late Merlin Place and grandson of Dale Place, who spoke about honoring the service of those who gave their lives in defense of Freedom.

The Crain Ottman Elmwood American Legion Post presented several awards to Legion members and members of the community May 29, beginning with a 56-year Continuous Membership Award to the late Merlin Place, presented to his widow Virginia Place.

The Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of Commendation Award was presented to Pam Reitz for her many years of dedicated service to the Elmwood community. The Legionnaire of the Year Award went to William Stewart for his countless hours transporting veterans to medical appointments, and a Certificate of Appreciation went to Ryan Rupakus for his volunteer efforts in keeping Veterans Memorial Park clear of snow all winter long (not pictured).
