The Prescott Cardinals softball team had a good week, winning three of four games and outscoring their opponents 42 runs to 15.

On Tuesday, May 4, Prescott defeated New Richmond on the road 16-7 before falling to Baldwin-Woodville on Thursday, May 6 at home. At Saturday’s triangular at Cochrane-Fountain City (CFC), Prescott dominated with a pair of 10-run victories. First, McDonell Central fell 13-3 before the Cardinals blew out host CFC, 11-1.

“Our pitching has been great,” Johnson elated. “Sydney (Matzek) and Taylor (Graf) continue to keep us in every game. They've improved with each start. At times our hitting has been very good. We're getting_production from top to bottom_in our lineup.”

Sophomore Taylor Graf pitched five innings and got credit for the win, recording seven strikeouts and giving up just three hits. CFC scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third before the Cardinals stomped all over home plate the next two innings, taking a 6-1 lead the following inning and adding five more in the fifth. Isabel Matzek recorded three RBI’s, while Sydney Matzek, Isabella Lenz and Katie Graf each sent a pair of runners home. Liz Rohl and Finley Magee also recorded an RBI for the Cardinals.

Against McDonell Central, Sydney Matzek pitched the win, recorded five RBI’s and hit a home run in the process. Prescott took a one-run lead in the opening inning before the Macks answered with three runs in the next inning. In the top of the third, the Cardinals evened the score before pouring in 10 runs in the fifth inning.

The Cardinals have already identified what they need to improve on the practice field in the coming weeks.

“Defensively we need to get better,” Johnson said. “We continue to make mistakes, which are leading to unearned runs. We need to help our pitchers out even more by making the routine plays.”

Prescott traveled to Osceola on Monday night before hosting St. Croix Central after the printing of this publication Tuesday night. The Cardinals travel to Ellsworth Thursday night and will stay busy this weekend when they play at Bloomer this Saturday at noon.

When asked what their team goals are in the coming weeks, Johnson said, “To keep improving. Clean things up defensively and continue to pitch and hit well. We keep showing we have the ability to be a very good team. It’s that time in the season to start showing in each game.”
