PRESCOTT – On July 12, 2022, 16 Prescott High School students and two teach- ers set ou on a trip of a lifetime. The group traveled for 10 days, exploring sights in Ger –
many, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzer – land. The journey started in Austria where the group first met up with a small group of stu – dents from Pittsburgh and then explored the Vienna city centre and other notable land –
marks such as the Hundertwasser Haus, a so –
cial housing project designed by Freidensre – ich Hundertwasser, and Schönbrunn Palace, the summer home of the Habsburg family. The group then traveled to Salzburg where they sang through the streets on a Sound of Music Tour. After Austria, the group traveled to Mu – nich, Germany and observed the contrasts of the history of the country. The Dachau Con – centration Camp Memorial Site provided a chance for reflection on the horrors of war only to be directly contrasted with the luxury and extravagance of Nymphenburg Palace, and then the day ended with some free time in Marienplatz, the central locale for the Mu –
nich Pride Festival.
One of the highlights of the trip for ev –
eryone included a day in Lucerne, Switzer – land, where the group had a walking tour of the city, shopped in the city centre, enjoyed a boat tour of Lake Lucerne, road a tram to the top of Mount Pilatus and cable cars back down, and ended the day with traditional Swiss music and fondue. The last day of the trip included stops in Heidelburg and Freiburg, Germany before fi – nally making the trip back home on July 21. Traveling to other parts of the world opens up new perspectives, events, and locations that the students would otherwise not expe – rience in the confines of a classroom. Kinsey Peterson, a junior, ouered this thought at the end of the journey: "European history has al – ways seemed far ou; it felt not only an ocean away in distance but in time as well. Seeing buildings that were older than the United States helped to put into perspective how in – consequential of a piece in time we are." The next trip, led by PHS history teacher Jeu Ryan, will be in summer 2024 to Italy and Greece. Submitted by Prescott High School
