Police were called to a two-vehicle crash at 4:45 p.m. Dec. 13 at Highway 29 and County Road BB in the town of Gilman between a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Thomas M. Sukowatey, 74, Elmwood, and a 2009 Kia, driven by Garrett Jeffrey Bruce, 19, Maiden Rock. Sukowatey was traveling south on County Road BB crossing Highway 29. He failed to yield the right of way to Bruce, striking him in the rear driver’s side. Bruce lost control and came to rest in the northeast ditch. Both vehicles had functional damage. Both drivers wore seat belts and reported no injuries.
Officers responded to a one-vehicle crash at 7:13 a.m. Dec. 14 at County Road A and 370th Avenue in the town of Salem. A 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Cody Michael Gipson, 21, Maiden Rock, was traveling north on County Road A, which was slippery and slushy. He lost control, entered the east ditch and hit a stand of trees. The vehicle had functional damage. Gipson wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash at 3:35 p.m. Dec. 15 in the parking lot of W7280 170th Ave. in the town of Hartland between a 1995 Oldsmobile, driven by Michael James Appleton, 78, Bay City, and a legally parked 2014 Jeep Patriot, owned by Mary Ann Lewis, Bay City. Appleton backed out of a parking stall and collided with the front driver’s side bumper of the Jeep. Both vehicles had minor damage. Appleton wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Police were called to a one-vehicle crash at 7:36 p.m. Dec. 15 on US Highway 63 just south of 780th Avenue in the town of Martell. A 2009 Dodge, driven by Alissa Marie Maier, 23, Jim Falls, was traveling southbound on Highway 63, lost control on the icy road, entered the west ditch and struck an Adopt-a-Highway signpost. The vehicle had minor damage; Maier wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Deputies were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 1:07 p.m. Dec. 16 that had occurred at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15 on US Highway 10 at Main Street/County Road U in the town of Union. A 2010 Chrysler Sebring, driven by Mason Eugene Clare, 16, Maiden Rock, was traveling north on Main Street approaching the stop sign at US Highway 10. He failed to maintain control, pressed the brakes, slid and struck the guard rail with the front end of his vehicle, which sustained minor damage. Clare wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Officers responded to a hit-and-run crash at 1:11 p.m. Dec. 16 on Highway 72 at County Road BB. An unknown vehicle had struck the guard rail and left the scene. It appeared as if the vehicle had been heading south on BB, went through the stop sign and struck the guard rail.
Deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash at 8:07 p.m. Dec. 16 on County Road F four-tenths of a mile south of 820th Avenue in the town of Clifton. A 2018 Ford F150, driven by John Richard Determan, 66, Hudson, was heading south on County Road F when it started to slide due to the ice. Determan tried to brake, but the truck went in a circle and the front end struck a guard rail end. It continued south and struck the guard rail face before coming to rest in the east ditch. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Determan wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Police were called to a one-vehicle crash at 1:35 a.m. Dec. 17 on County Road V just west of 550th Street in the town of Hartland. A 2006 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Ryan Matthew Most, 36, Ellsworth, was northbound on 550th Street and failed to negotiate turning west onto County Road V. He traveled across the county highway and went into the north ditch. Most drove around the field in multiple directions, but ended up hitting a culvert before getting pulled out. He drove the vehicle back to a friend’s residence and later contacted law enforcement to report the crash. He had license plates on the vehicle but had recently purchased it and had not completed the registration paperwork. The vehicle had functional damage. Most wore a seat belt and reported no injuries. He was cited for non-registration of auto and deviation from designated lane.
Officers responded to a tractor vs. vehicle crash at 5:35 p.m. Dec. 17 on County Road D just south of 290th Avenue in the town of Hartland between a 1977 John Deere 4230, driven by Abraham Anthony Fick, 31, Maiden Rock, and a 2009 Dodge R2500, driven by Paul Gregory Tonsager, 66, Ellsworth. Fick was heading north on County Road D and was slowing down to make a right-hand turn. Tonsager said he didn’t see that Fick had slowed down until it was too late. He slammed on his brakes, but due to the icy road, slid into the rear equipment trailer pulled by Fick. The trailer came unhitched from the tractor and struck the tractor’s cab, causing damage to its rear. Both vehicles had functional damage. Neither driver reported injuries.
Deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash at 4:16 p.m. Dec. 18 on County Road B 1,200 feet north of 170th Street in the town of Spring Lake. A 2002 Honda CRV, driven by Reese Lyn Paul,
16, Elmwood, was heading south on the snow/ice-covered roadway when it lost control, crossed over the northbound lane, descended into the ditch and hit the rock wall of the embankment. The vehicle was propelled back out of the ditch onto the road where it came to rest in the southbound lane. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Paul, who wore a seat belt, reported possible injuries but was not transported to a hospital by ambulance.
Officers were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 11:29 a.m. Dec. 19 that had occurred at 9 a.m. on 790th Street eight-tenths of a mile west of Cottonwood Lane in the town of River Falls. A 2008 Ford Expedition, driven by Devin Allan Christopherson, 27, River Falls, was traveling north on 790th Street, lost control and went into the ditch, striking a barbed wire fence. Christopherson said he got too close to the road’s edge and the snow pulled him into the ditch. The towing company had to cut the fence because it was wrapped around the front end of the Expedition. Christopherson wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash at 5:35 p.m. Dec. 19 on County Road U just south of 90th Street in the town of Maiden Rock. A 2002 Ford F150, driven by Cooper Kenneth Jensen,
24, Ellsworth, was heading south on County Road U when it lost control on the slick road, left the road, slid down an embankment and hit several small trees. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Jensen wore a seat belt and reported no injuries.
Police responded at 5:22 p.m. Dec. 20 to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash on Highway 35 just east of 1240th Street in the town of Oak Grove. A 2016 Ford Edge, driven by Leila May Koehnen, 42, Harris, Minn., was traveling south on Highway 35. Lynda Marie Hudak, 73, Prescott, was walking across the road back to her vehicle after she had gotten the mail. Koehnen struck Hudak, who was pronounced dead at the scene. An ambulance transported Koehnen to River Falls Area Hospital with possible injuries. She was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
