Pierce County accidents Dec. 22-Jan. 16

Police were notified of a hit and run crash at 11:51 a.m. Dec. 22 on Highway 29 at Wagon Trail Road in Spring Valley. A 2010 Ford Focus, operated by an unknown driver and owned by Garrett Wayne Garvin, Menomonie, was traveling northbound, entered the ditch, crossed Wagon Trail Road, struck a traffic sign and came to a stop. The driver fled the scene; open intoxicants were located inside and outside the vehicle, which was towed due to disabling damage.

Officers were dispatched at 12:55 p.m. Dec. 24 to a one-vehicle crash on Highway 35 one-half mile north of 468th Avenue in the town of Oak Grove. A 2014 Chevy Cruze, driven by Matthew James Hafner, 27, La Crescent, Minn., was heading south on Highway 35. Hafner said he was talking to his girlfriend on the phone and didn’t know what happened. He failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, veered off the road to the right and struck multiple rocks, causing the vehicle to lose a wheel. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Police were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 9:12 a.m. Dec. 27 that occurred at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 25 at N221 McKay Ave., Spring Valley. A 2007 Pontiac, driven by Owen James Sims, 17, Spring Valley, was driving north in an alleyway, turned into the driveway at N221 McKay Ave., and struck the lower section of a garage door at the residence. He then backed out and parked on the street. The homeowner said Sims gave her his name and told her to send him the bill. When she didn’t hear back from him, she called police. Sims’ vehicle had no damage.

Deputies were dispatched to a one-vehicle crash at 1:02 p.m. Dec. 28 on County Road O just north of 560th Avenue in the town of Trimbelle. A 2013 Nissan Xterra, driven by Hope Marie Schmaltz, 22, Red Wing, Minn., was heading north on County Road O when Schmaltz looked down at her phone. When she tried to slow down, nothing happened when she pressed the brake. She drove into the eastern ditch and struck numerous trees until she hit and large tree and stopped, coming to rest on a large boulder. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Police were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 4:12 a.m. Dec. 29 that occurred at 2:30 a.m. on 1200th Street just north of 526th Avenue in the town of Oak Grove. A 2011 Chevy Cruze, driven by Jenel Marie Stuart, 46, Prescott, was heading north on 1200th Street, lost control on a curve, slid off the road into the ditch, where it struck multiple trees. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Stuart and passenger Brandon Nels Stuart, 19, Prescott, reported no injuries.

Officers were notified of a two-vehicle crash at 12:50 p.m. Dec. 29 that occurred at 11 a.m. on Main Street just south of Pine Avenue in Plum City. An unknown vehicle backed into a legally parked 2017 Chevy Equinox, owned by Breanna Lynn Wohlberg, Sandstone, Minn. The vehicle had minor damage.

Officers were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 8:25 a.m. Dec. 31 on 580th Avenue one-third mile west of 670th Street in Ellsworth. A 2011 Ford Escape, driven by Gavin Brian Pervin, 17, Hudson, was heading west, crossed the center line and ran into the east ditch. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Deputies were dispatched at 5:53 p.m. Jan. 2 to a one-vehicle crash on 730th Street one-third mile south of 410th Avenue in the town of Hartland. An unknown vehicle struck a mailbox and left the scene without reporting any damage.

Police responded at 1:40 a.m.  Jan. 4 to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 65 just north of 690th Avenue in the town of River Falls. A 2004 Chevy Silverado, driven by Adam Michael Rood, 34, Ellsworth, crossed the center line into oncoming traffic while traveling south on Highway 65. A 2021 Ram 1500, driven by Della Jean Borst, 52, Ellsworth, tried to swerve out of the way, but their driver’s side mirrors collided. Rood left the scene but police eventually located him. Both vehicles had minor damage; neither driver reported injuries. However, Rood was cited for hit and run, operate without valid license, possess open intoxicants in motor vehicle – driver and OWI-second.

Officers were dispatched at 8:24 a.m. Jan. 7 to a one-vehicle crash at Highway 35 and 1180th Street in the town of Oak Grove. A 2011 Chevy Silverado, driven by Austin Paul Hart, 30, Hastings, Minn., was heading north on Highway 35, veered off the road, caught the gravel shoulder, overcorrected back onto the road and skidded. It crossed the center line and entered the left ditch, where it struck a stop sign and street sign. The truck was towed due to disabling damage. Hart reported no injuries.

Deputies were notified of a three-vehicle crash at 5:19 p.m. Jan. 9 on Highway 63 just north of 390th Avenue in the town of Trenton between a 2018 Chevy Silverado, driven by Michael Robert Flett, 62, Ellsworth; a 2002 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Trae Christopher Christiansen, 16, Ellsworth; and a 2017 Ram Promaster, driven by Jacob John Hinrichs, 45, Maiden Rock. Christiansen and Hinrichs were heading south on Highway 63. Christiansen slowed and signaled a left-hand turn to turn into a nearby driveway. Ther front driver’s side of Hinrichs’ vehicle rear-ended Christiansen’s Jeep and pushed it into the northbound traffic lane, where it struck the northbound Chevy driven by Flett. The Chevy had minor damage and Flett reported suspected minor injuries. The Jeep and Promaster were towed due to disabling damage. Christiansen and Hinrichs reported no injuries.

Police responded at 6:49 p.m. Jan. 9 to a one-vehicle crash on 770th Street one-third mile east of 830th Avenue in the town of River Falls. A 2022 Toyota Camry, driven by Vicki Marie Galgowski, 71, River Falls, was heading south on 770th Avenue and attempted to negotiate a sharp right turn. Galgowski lost control, ran off the road to the left shoulder, crossed the northbound lane and landed in the ditch against a support cable for a utility pole. The vehicle had minor damage. Galgowski reported no injuries.

Deputies responded at 1:38 p.m. Jan. 10 to a two-vehicle crash at Highway 63 and County Road K in the town of Trimbelle between a 2018 Chevy Silverado, driven by Richard Wayne Bryant Jr., 62, Dallas Center, Iowa, and a 2016 Ram 1500, driven by Tucker Shayne Johnson, 20, Ellsworth. Bryant was heading north on Highway 63 and made a left hand turn onto County Road K without yielding to Johnson, who was heading south on Highway 63. Johnson’s truck, struck in the rear right side, spun into a stop sign and into the ditch. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Neither driver nor Johnson’s passenger Bryon Evan Wendt, 56, Ellsworth, reported injuries.

Police were called at 4:39 p.m. Jan. 10 to a one-vehicle rollover on County Road C one-half mile south of 250th Avenue in the town of Hartland. A 2005 Dodge Neon, driven by Chrysler Ann Huron, 18, Ellsworth, was heading south on County Road C. While attempting to negotiate a curve, she lost control of the vehicle, slid across the road, entered the eastern ditch and rolled at least twice before coming to rest on the Neon’s roof. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Huron reported no injuries.

Deputies were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 4:07 a.m. Jan. 11 that occurred on County Road A just south of 385th Street in the town of Salem. A 2017 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Gabriella Aliene Christian, 19, Maiden Rock, was heading north on County Road A while negotiating a curve. The vehicle slid on the snow and ice and veered into the ditch, where it overturned into the Rush River. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Christian reported no injuries.

Officers were dispatched at 11:17 p.m. Jan. 11 to a one-vehicle crash on 710th Street just south of 490th Avenue in the town of Ellsworth. A 2000 Ford F150, driven by Jensen John Merrill, 16, Ellsworth, was heading northbound on 710th Street too fast for conditions. The truck crossed the center line, entered the ditch, drove through a field and struck a fence and tree. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. EMS transported Merrill to River Falls Area Hospital with suspected minor injuries. He was cited for failure to keep vehicle under control.

Deputies responded at 7:42 a.m. Jan. 12 to a one-vehicle crash on County Road F one-third mile south of 820th Avenue in the town of Clifton. A 2007 Toyota, driven by Hallie Jean Johnson, 17, River Falls, was traveling south on County Road F down the Clifton Hollow Hill, lost control on the slushy roadway, fish tailed, spun around facing the opposite direction and came to a stop against a concrete guardrail. The vehicle had functional damage. Johnson reported no injuries.

Police responded at 12:55 p.m. Jan. 12 to a one-vehicle crash at 140th Avenue and 803rd Street in the town of Trenton. A 2011 Chevy Equinox, driven by Jennifer A. Radunz, 18, Hager City, was traveling south on 803rd Street when she attempted to turn right onto 140th. The vehicle lost control on the icy road, went off the road and struck a stop sign. The vehicle had minor damage. Radunz reported no injuries.

Deputies were called at 7:34 p.m. Jan. 12 to a one-vehicle crash on Highway 10 just west of 730th Street in the town of Trimbelle. A 2013 Ford Focus, driven by Oscar Alberto Andrade Castillo, 27, Ellsworth, was traveling eastbound on Highway 10. He lost control due to road conditions, left the road, hit a culvert/driveway and came to a stop 10 yards off the road. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Andrade Castillo reported no injuries; he was cited for OWI, driving too fast for conditions, operate motor vehicle without insurance and operate without valid license (second within three years).

Officers were notified at 11:54 a.m. Jan. 13 of a crash that occurred at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 on County Road N just west of 650th Avenue in the town of El Paso. A 2015 Chevy Silverado, driven by Logan Paul Mahedy, 21, Menomonie, was heading north on County Road N, crossed the center line, went into a ditch and struck a tree. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Mahedy reported no injuries; he was cited for failure to keep vehicle under control.

Police responded at 9:53 a.m. Jan. 14 to a two-vehicle crash at 850th Avenue and County Road BB in the town of Gilman between a 2020 Freightliner Corp. straight truck, driven by David Allen Morris, 53, Spring Valley, and a 2018 Chevy Traverse, driven by Audrey Soungui Ahdunko, 28, Woodville. Morris was traveling westbound when he tried to stop for a stop sign and slid through the intersection, striking the southbound Chevy, which had the right of way. Ahdunko’ vehicle was pushed into the ditch, where it took out a stop sign. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Neither driver nor Ahdunko’s 2-year-old passenger reported injuries. Morris was cited for fail/yield right/way from stop sign.

Deputies were called at 3:06 p.m. Jan. 14 to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 63 just east of 150th Street in the town of Trenton between a 2018 Chevy Silverado, driven by Ricky Allen Nesteby, 61, Red Wing, Minn., and a 2006 Ford F150, driven by Michael Carl Antanitis, 58, Ellsworth. Nesteby was traveling northbound on Highway 63 when he slowed to a stop with his left blinker on, waiting to turn left since oncoming traffic was present. Antanitis, who was behind him, looked down to grab something. When he looked up, it was too late to stop and he struck Nesteby. Nesteby’s truck had functional damage while Antanitis’ truck was towed due to disabling damage. Neither driver nor Nesteby’s passenger, Lia Jay McGaughey, 53, Red Wing, Minn., reported injuries. Antanitis was cited for operate motor vehicle without insurance and automobile following too closely.

Officers were dispatched at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 15 to a one-vehicle crash on Highway 65 just south of County Road J in the town of Ellsworth. A 2023 Mazda CX-30, driven by Sophia Nicole Korman, 24, Ellsworth, was heading northbound on Highway 65 when it lost control on the icy road, crossed the center line and drove into the west ditch. It continued across a culvert, causing an airbag to deploy before landing in a field. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. EMS transported Korman to River Falls Area Hospital with possible injuries.

Deputies responded at 6:28 p.m. Jan. 15 to a one-vehicle crash on Highway 65 just south of 610th Avenue in the town of Ellsworth. A 2004 Toyota Sequoia, driven by Edward James Sarnstrom, 35, Ellsworth, was heading south of Highway 65, crossed the center line and went into the ditch. The vehicle, which had functional damage, was towed due to the snow and ice. Sarnstrom reported no injuries.

Police were notified of a one-vehicle crash at 2:38 a.m. Jan. 16 on Highway 63 just north of 825th Street in the town of Trenton. A 2016 Ford Escape, driven by David Letrell Truss, 21, Red Wing, Minn., was traveling northbound on Highway 63 near an unnamed road. Truss was distracted by the passenger and began to slide off the road. He entered the east ditch, continued for 100 yards and came to a stop. The vehicle was towed and had functional damage. Truss and passenger Ashley Marie Drake, 21, Rochester, Minn., reported no injuries. Truss was cited for failure of operator to notify police of accident, possess open intoxicants in motor vehicle – driver and driving too fast for conditions. Drake was cited for failure of occupant to notify police of accident. Alcohol use was a suspected factor in the crash.

Deputies were dispatched at 7:21 a.m. Jan. 16 to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 10 just east of 860th Street in the town of Trimbelle between a 1999 Honda Accord, driven by Gina Lynn Willmarth, 44, Prescott, and an illegally parked 2022 GMC Sierra, driven by Tanner James Olson, 33, Ellsworth. Willmarth was heading east on Highway 10 when she lost control on the icy road and collided with Olson’s truck, which was parked on the south side of Highway 10 so he could get mail from a mailbox. The Honda was towed due to disabling damage; EMS transported Willmarth to a Minnesota hospital with suspected minor injuries. Olson’s truck had functional damage; he reported no injuries.
