Beer license controversy still brews

By Laurel Menne

Wednesday, July 2, the Prescott Licensing Committee approved a resolution to send to Prescott City Council concerning the number of off-sale liquor licenses in the City of Prescott.

By unanimous vote, the committee is recommending to the city council that there be no residential quota on off-sale Class-A Fermented Malt Beverage Licenses.

Down at the river: Prescott’s historic bell moved from Bell Park to the Welcome and Heritage Center.

Quote of the Week: “I feel badly that I didn’t get to fulfill my term on the board.”

Nancy Kent on having to resign from the Prescott School Board.

Pulled from racing waters near Highway 10, two Hastings women were saved. The discovery came after a farmer concerned for his livestock came across their vehicle, the two having taken a shortcut on 860th Street in Trimbelle before getting swept away by floodwaters.

PIERCE COUNTY HERALD

July 12, 1973

Organizing a “Foolish Friday” on Friday the 13th in East Ellsworth Park, there was a water fight between the Ellsworth Fire Department and “an outside group,” the Herald made known. A King of Korn and Queen of Pollen would also be chosen at the event, put on by the Ellsworth Commercial Club.

Meeting across town the day before on July 12 to hear opponents of a nuclear power plant, the Pierce County Democratic Party was addressed at the courthouse annex meeting room in Ellsworth at 8:30 p.m. by Dr. Edward Pryzina, a member of Concerned Citizens for the Future.

With the meeting open to all who were concerned about the splitting of the atom for electric generation purposes, Pryzina was a member of Concerned Citizens for the Future, a group opposed to nuclear power plant construction until it could be proven safe.

THE RIVER FALLS JOURNAL

July 7, 1938

Just years old in 1938, taxes collected for Social Security purposes were being used to finance deficits, a group called the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance claimed.

“Although the Social Security Act specifically provides that the Secretary of the Treasury shall set up an old age reserve account, the law does not provide that the social security tax collections shall be placed in the account,” the Alliance said. “Instead, the law gives congress the right to make annual appropriations to the account of an amount sufficient to meet future payments when computed on a scientific basis at three percent interest compounded annually.”

Up to date information on Social Security as it exists and is administered today can be found at ssa.gov.
