Plum City Care Center observes Memorial Day

Posted

Our week began with a beautifully sunny Memorial Day and Willow was here to play morning dice games with residents! In remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, the American Legion visited a little later for a Memorial Day presentation. Residents, including those who are veterans, gathered outside to watch and celebrate. After lunch residents gathered to grab their own patriotic popsicle. It was so warm outside that the popsicles were the perfect treat to cool down. The day ended with an Oh My Stars! Target Shoot. Willow brought out the NERF dart gun and folks practiced their sharpshooting skills in order to receive as many points as possible! We hope everyone had an enjoyable and meaningful Memorial Day.

After breakfast Tuesday morning, folks settled in for Mass with Father Jojo and Terry Pelzel. We always appreciate these gentlemen stopping by to spend time with residents and lead them in prayer and reflection! Lunch was soon served afterwards and once mail had been delivered, Stacey was in the dining room with the trusty popcorn machine. She served up bowlfuls of fresh and delicious popcorn which always draws a crowd, as no one can resist gobbling up the crunchy kernels! There was time later for visiting and soon Pastor Andrew from Pepin Immanuel Lutheran Church was here for afternoon services for residents. Thank you to all our faith leaders and their service to our community!

Our resident bowlers were in it to win it on Wednesday morning and crashing pins could be heard throughout the building as Janet Robelia came in fourth; Goldie Helwig, Kay George, Barb Holmstadt and Dorothy Pfaffe all tied for third, and Shirley Klinski, Jeff Halverson and Kevin Bauer tied for second. First place was awarded to Wilbur Black with a perfect score of 30 points after three rounds! A special shout-out to Goldie Helwig, Kevin Bauer and Wilbur Black for scoring the only three strikes of the morning. The game came to a close and residents refreshed themselves with a little lunch. Fruit Bingo was the name of the game in the afternoon and Irene Helmueller and Harriet Rothe were here to help with the game. Congratulations to Alice Brantner for winning the $1 prize at Blackout this week! We finished out the day with our Mid-Week Social where a large crowd hung out in the dining room to enjoy cool and delicious ice cream sandwiches!

Harriet Rothe was at the care center Thursday morning for our Local News and Coffee group, full of new stories to share and ready to read folks the local papers. We appreciate her smiling face and cheerful demeanor which always draws a large crowd! Lunch and mail delivery came and went, and then we had a special treat in the afternoon as the Plum City High School choir came for a concert. Eight very talented singers (including our very own Willow!) gave a beautiful performance which everyone enjoyed! Once the concert came to an end, there was time for lots of one-on-one visiting and spending time outside to soak up the much needed sunshine. After suppertime, Willow was back for an evening game of Pokeno!

Before you knew it, Friday was upon us and that meant it was time for a morning game of Shuffleboard! There was quite a crowd as 15 folks came out for the game in which Goldie Helwig came in fourth place, Yvonne Sinz was in third and Kevin Bauer came in second. Wilbur Black was our first-place winner this week! Lunch and mail delivery came and went, and then the monthly Resident Council meeting (led by Stacey) came to order in the afternoon. Residents gathered to look back on the past month’s activities, look ahead to the next month’s schedule and discuss anything on their minds happening at the care center. Once the meeting adjourned, Noel and Chef Jeff whipped up a double batch of Apple and Snickers Salad in preparation for Happy Hour. It was soon time for Happy Hour and Johnny Keyz brought the piano tunes, putting on quite the show for our large crowd while folks snacked on the sweet apple and Snicker salad! All too soon the party was over, supper arrived and then it was time for Movie Night. This week’s Friday night flick was the Robin Williams family comedy “RV!”
