The Plum City/Elmwood Wolves played their first game last week.
After finishing 8-15 a season ago, the experienced team looks to raise their standing in the competitive Dunn-St. Croix conference after finishing seventh with a 3-11 record in conference play.
Junior Luke Webb led the team in scoring in rebounding, averaging over 12 points, 10 rebounds and nearly two assists per contest. Senior Basil Gilles averaged nearly nine points and five rebounds per game, while junior guard Dayne Whipple scored nearly eight points and dished out 1.5 assists on average.
“As for our goals this season, we want to improve each and every game from the previous one by learning from our mistakes and polishing our own game,” Head Coach Kyle Webb stated.
After the Wolves had nonconference games against Ellsworth and Gilmanton cancelled, the team finally stepped onto the court last week Thursday, December 17th when they hosted Clear Lake.
The Wolves were led by junior Luke Webb’s 18 points. Junior Jarrod Pelzel contributed another eight points, while senior Austin Bartz chipped in another six. Whipple scored four and Gilles netted the other three points in the 47-39 loss.
“Our steps for preparation_include fundamentals (both offensive and defensive), working hard to make sure that we do the little things right on both ends of the floor, and reiterating_with the players that we have high expectations for them and want them to work hard each and every day,” expressed Webb.
Plum City/Elmwood hosted Elk Mound at Elmwood High School and traveled to Colfax Tuesday night. The Mounders (2-4) beat Spring Valley in their only Dunn-St. Croix Conference game and, more recently, won 59-38 at Augusta last Friday. The Vikings (1-2) split two Dunn-St. Croix games, with a win at Glenwood City and a loss last Thursday to Mondovi, 74-63. It will be the Vikings’ fourth game in six days after traveling to Turtle Lake Saturday and New Auburn on Monday.
“In regard to our back-to-back games next week, we are going to refine our offense and work some of the wrinkles out while building on our, what I thought to be, outstanding defense,” declared Webb. “I think after last night, both varsity_and JV guys know what they need to improve on and are motivated enough_to push themselves and each other to get better. We know that Elk Mound and Colfax are going to be tough opponents, as they always have been quality programs, and we will work hard to match up and play the best basketball we possibly can.”
