Prescott and RF putting on Coaches vs. Cancer basketball doubleheader

PRESCOTT — River Falls and Prescott are set to battle in a boys/girls varsity basketball doubleheader at Prescott High School on Jan. 6, but they are fighting for more than some wins.

The doubleheader will be benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, to fight against cancer.

Prescott and River Falls have both done similar events in the past, and with the two schools being close to each other, it simply made sense to put this idea into motion.

“At Prescott we’ve done it in years past, and I know at River Falls they have done it also, so it kind of just worked out,” Prescott Activities Director Matt Smith said. “Being a close proximity with the game there, it should be a lot of fans and then it being a doubleheader, boys and girls, that kind of adds a little extra oomph to it.”

Smith said the reason so many people get behind this cause is because of the countless number of lives cancer has impacted.

“Everyone you talk to is impacted by cancer in some way or form,” Smith said. “An opportunity that people can kind of rally around a great cause to try to find a cure is pretty cool.”

The school is pleased they could get both the boys’ and girls’ teams together on the same night, because it brings together both fanbases to unite for one common goal.

“Cancer in general impacts a lot of people and a lot of families,” Smith said. “For everyone to have that opportunity to give back and raise some money for the boys and the girls and the communities to kind of rally together, I think that makes it extra special.”
The Cardinals are planning ribbon sales to honor people impacted by cancer, bucket runs through the crowd and potentially some raffles sprinkled in.

“The biggest thing is come out and catch a couple basketball games, support the kids,” Smith said. “If you throw an extra $10, $20 in your pocket that night to come out and put that toward a good cause, we would be greatly appreciative.”

The boys’ game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. with the girls game to follow.
