What’s up in history? A lot is the answer. The Prescott Area Historical Society, a branch of the Pierce County Historical Association, is getting ready for their major yearly presentation. Last year they featured the Floods of Prescott and had 800 visitors in 10 days. This year they are presenting the over 170-year history of the Schools of Prescott. There will be hundreds of photos, viewable in various formats, along with artifacts from various organizations and events from the different buildings and venues used by the district and examples of report cards, graduation notices, and other documents of Prescott’s school history.

They will be featuring two very influential men from the district’s past: DJ Malone and Dave Zerahn.  Malone was instrumental in creating the district itself and putting in place the school board, with all townships represented, we still use today. He was a math teacher, coach, Boy Scout Leader, and more. Zerahn is carried in the hearts of the hundreds of Prescott students he inspired and mentored over the years in his nationally famous music program. From creating a top-notch marching band that performed nationwide, in Disney World and the Cheyenne, Wyo. Showcase competition, to recording Prescott’s band for posterity, even featuring local singer Dorothy Most, Mr. Z was a gift.

A jersey and T-shirt collection will be shown from several years. An old manual typewriter has been dragged out to bring you back to typing class with Mr. Maiola. Janitors, cooks, and bus drivers, without whom a school can run, will be honored also. So stop in downtown Prescott for a walk through Prescott’s past.

Dates are from May 4-18. Hours are weekdays from 4-8 p.m. and weekends hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Normal hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
