PRESCOTT — The Prescott City Council honored the memory of a remarkable young community member Monday evening by approving a proclamation designating June 18 as "Bryson's Silly Goose Day" in the City of Prescott.
The proclamation, presented during the council's June 8 meeting, recognizes the life and legacy of Bryson Scott McGrath, affectionately known to family and friends as "Goose" or "Goosie." Bryson died after a courageous 1,027-day battle with childhood cancer, but his spirit, resilience, and joy for life continue to inspire those who knew him.
Mayor Michael Gerke signed the proclamation, noting the profound impact the 5-year-old had on the Prescott community.
"Bryson's life serves as a reminder of the profound impact one child can have on a community and the enduring power of love, joy, kindness, compassion, and resilience," the proclamation states.
Despite facing significant health challenges throughout much of his young life, Bryson was known for embracing the things that brought him happiness. He enjoyed visiting playgrounds around Prescott, watching trains pass along the river, spending time at the beach and swimming, and indulging in favorite treats such as ice cream, donuts, spaghetti, and Taco Bell steak quesadillas. Family and friends also fondly remember him rarely being without his large, cold sippy cup of white milk.
Bryson's love of music, dancing, storytelling, imagination, and silliness brought comfort and laughter to those around him, even during the most difficult moments. His courage throughout his cancer journey inspired not only those closest to him but also countless others.
The newly designated "Bryson's Silly Goose Day" will be observed annually on June 18, Bryson's birthday. City leaders hope the day will serve as an opportunity for residents to celebrate Bryson's memory by embracing the qualities he embodied—joy, kindness, compassion, laughter, and resilience.
The proclamation also aims to raise awareness and support for children and families affected by childhood cancer.
Mayor Gerke encouraged residents to honor Bryson through acts of kindness, community support, and by celebrating life in the joyful and silly ways that he loved most. During the meeting, Alderperson Dar Hintz addressed Bryson's family, expressing the community's support and admiration for their strength throughout Bryson's battle.
"Just know that as a community, we're behind you. We stand by your family. You're in our thoughts and prayers," Hintz said. "I'm amazed at the amount of strength you all have, and your family and friends as well."
The proclamation was officially signed on June 8, 2026, making June 18 "Bryson's Silly Goose Day" in the City of Prescott.
