The Prescott Common Council approved a special event permit for the Friends of Freedom Park's A Confluence of Communities during its July 13 meeting, clearing the way for the public celebration to take place on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Park.

The free event is expected to draw between 250 and 300 attendees and will feature food trucks, vendors, cultural programming and live performances celebrating the region's Native American heritage. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

During the meeting, Friends of Freedom Park Executive Director Linda Schenk presented the site plan, outlining the event layout and planned activities. Organizers also requested the city's assistance by providing two portable toilets and electrical extension cords for the event.

Friends of Freedom Park President Jared Schmitz, speaking on behalf of the organizers, reviewed the event's traffic and parking plan. He said the updated plan increases available parking by approximately 50 percent and includes shuttle service from the high school to transport attendees to and from the park.

Organizers will also be responsible for implementing the approved traffic control plan, including setting up traffic control devices the day before the event and ensuring traffic is safely managed throughout the day.

The event's entertainment will include performances by the Ojibwe Drum Group, the Lac du Flambeau Drum Group – Tomahawk Circle, traditional Ojibwe and Dakota dancers, and the Dakota Drum Group – Imnizaska.

The council unanimously approved the special event permit.

"I'm excited. It's going to be really great," Alderperson Dar Hintz said following the vote.

Mayor Mike Gerke agreed, expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming community event.
