Prescott golf seals two MBC wins, Ellsworth’s youth finding a rhythm

The Middle Border Conference got in its fair share of golf Monday afternoon, playing a round both in Ellsworth and in Prescott. The Cardinals won both meets off a flurry of top 10 performances. Ellsworth got off to a bit of a slow start, but found themselves later on in the day, finishing sixth during the Prescott leg.

Prescott senior Tyler Reiter won the Ellsworth leg by two strokes with a 35 score. Fellow seniors Sam Vesperman (40, tied for third) and Harris Linderholm (41, seventh) joined Reiter in the top 10. On the Prescott leg, Reiter tied senior Luke Kinneman for first with 35 strokes a piece and Vesperman finished fifth with a 38.

“It was not the greatest day, but we found a way to fight in this wind,” Prescott Head Coach Scott Hamilton said.

Missing a few starters early in the year, Hamilton credited Beau Risdon and Miles Malm for stepping up to the plate.

“Miles Malm has been playing really well for his second year really golfing,” Hamilton said. “He’s getting right around that bogey golf, so he’s doing well.”

Malm took 23rd during the Prescott leg with a score of 45.

Hamilton said it was Linderholm’s first meet of the year, and he came away with a seventh-place finish. With a win at the Reedsburg Invitational and now some conference wins under their belt, the dream of this team establishing the Prescott boys golf culture is becoming a reality.

“This is the year. They all want to do it, they’ve all got that expectation,” Hamilton said. “Second ever State appearance is our goal for Prescott. First ever conference championship for Prescott boys golf, it’s our goal, and these boys want it.”

As the year goes on, Hamilton expects putting to improve as the weather starts to warm up.

“Spring golf is always hard,” Hamilton said. “As the greens start getting better, to see their putting get a little better is the biggest thing.”

Ellsworth had a slower day, but Head Coach Carson Huppert has already seen some growth from the young roster.

“We’re a young team which is good to see,” Huppert said. “Just building the general knowledge of course management. I’ve seen every one of these kids play some good golf, we’ve just got to string it together.

“We didn’t get started very efficiently, but we kind of got it together toward the end and finished strong,” Huppert said.

Sophomore Cooper Olson is a name Huppert said fans should look out for. Olson took second during the team’s first conference event in Altoona.

“He was one that kind of started a little slower today, but he finished strong,” Huppert said. “I expect him to hopefully continue looking like he has and maybe get all-conference here as a sophomore, which would be pretty remarkable.”
