The Prescott football team put up a good fight for Coach Jordan Hansen in his first game Friday night. The Cardinals came back in the second half but fell at Baldwin-Woodville, 34-13.
“I thought we did pretty well overall. We got some movement. We held onto the football. We drove down the field well. Defensively, we played pretty well against the run game. I thought we did well up front,” Hansen said.
It’s been a tough start to the season for the Cardinals as they came into the game with 13 players just coming off COVID-19 quarantine.
“They were out two weeks. You can’t plan for that,” he said.
The game was a lot closer than the eventual final.
“A few big plays, if they went differently it would have made a difference. The kids really fought hard, but we have to clean up some things,” he said.
Twice the Cardinals backed Baldwin-Woodville into third and 20 situations, and both times the home team was able to score. “We have to work on some things, but we have the potential to be OK,” Hansen said.
B-W jumped out to a 20-0 lead but Prescott didn’t give up. Quarterback Grant Stanton had a big night rushing, and he took in the score from two yards out, for Prescott’s first score of the season. B-W answered, however.
Late in the game Stanton ran in for another score from 38 yards out.
Stanton finished with 121 yards rushing on 22 carries. Aiden Russell ran 10 times for 39 yards, while Alex Holt had seven carries for 16 yards and Brady Block rushed four times for 18 yards.
Russell caught the lone Prescott pass from Stanton for 13 yards.
The Cardinals out-rushed Baldwin-Woodville by a 186-117 margin, but B-W threw for 169 yards on the night.
This week, Prescott will play its first home game, with rival Ellsworth coming to town for a 7 p.m. game.
“We really need to focus on ourselves in every game. We have to focus on getting better. Ellsworth is a tough team. They beat Osceola. We’ll have our work cut out for us this week,” said Hansen. “We’re going to keep working hard.”
