Prescott Legion to be up and running for Prescott DAZE

PRESCOTT — After a long month of repairs, Prescott American Legion Post 61 expects to be fully up and running for Prescott DAZE festivities.

On July 18, the Legion announced over Facebook that its post building, located at 710 Pearl St., closed a few weeks prior because rainfall caused foundation issues. Along with the wall damage repair, the Legion wanted to complete projects including a new handicap ramp, relocation of an air conditioning unit, downstairs bathrooms and a new sign.

“The goal is to be up and running by Prescott DAZE,” Post 61 Adjutant Mike Meier said during an Aug. 22 interview. “They broke ground with the wall and everything, the cement pouring and all that good stuff to get the wall started, on the 19th.”

Meier said they also want to be ready for chicken fry season in October.

“That is a large chunk of what we do. Having Prescott DAZE really, really helps us out,” Meier said.

To raise some funds for the projects, the Legion held a backyard luau fundraiser, a fundraiser with Dueling Pianos and a partnership with River City Stitch to produce “Simply Local” merch. Meier thanked everyone in the community for helping raise the funds to make everything possible. For people still interested in contributing, Meier asked that people just keep on attending events and supporting them that way.

“They can just continue to support the Legion as they normally do, and when we’re finally up and running, to come check it out,” Meier said.

Meier said the Prescott community showed through the fundraisers that they support keeping a Legion Post in Prescott, and they want to return that favor.

“It means the world to us. We support the community as much as we can through doing our Easter egg hunt for the kids, we do the Memorial Day… we have our Legion baseball team that we support, we also do the Legion scholarship fund,” Meier said. “As we continue to support Prescott, Prescott is in turn supporting us, and the community has been great at doing that all throughout this.”

Meier thanked all the volunteers and members who have helped with the repairs over the summer.

“It’s been a long road, it seems like, but we’ll be back up and running in no time,” Meier said.
