PRESCOTT – At its regular meeting on June 22, the Prescott City Council heard a proclamation from Mayor Michael Gerke commemorating the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States of America and recognizing the efforts of Prescott American Legion Post 61 in organizing a local celebration of the historic milestone.
The proclamation noted that the nation's founding on July 4, 1776, established the principles of liberty, equality, self-government, and the pursuit of happiness, values that have guided the country for nearly two and a half centuries.
Gerke's proclamation also recognized the sacrifices made by members of the United States Armed Forces, veterans and their families in preserving those freedoms throughout the nation's history. In addition, the mayor highlighted the longstanding contributions of Prescott American Legion Post 61, citing its commitment to veterans, civic engagement, and community service.
As part of the observance, Prescott American Legion Post 61 will host a community celebration on July 11, 2026, to honor America's 250th anniversary. The event is expected to bring together residents, veterans, active military personnel, and community leaders in a spirit of patriotism and gratitude.
In the proclamation, Gerke formally commemorated the nation's semiquincentennial year and commended Prescott American Legion Post 61 for its leadership in organizing the city's celebration.
The mayor also encouraged residents to take part in the observance, honor the service and sacrifices of veterans and military members, reflect on the responsibilities of citizenship, and reaffirm their commitment to the principles upon which the United States was founded.
The proclamation was officially signed and issued on June 22, 2026, bearing the seal of the City of Prescott.
The July 11 celebration will serve as one of the community's opportunities to recognize the nation's 250-year history while honoring the individuals and organizations that continue to uphold the values of service, freedom and civic responsibility.
