PRESCOTT – If you pass by room G-5 at Malone Intermediate School and the lights are on, they are likely accompanied by sounds of lively interaction, friendly competition and jovial laughter. Seniors may be engaged in a game of Buck Euchre, making a craft or project, listening to a guest speaker or holding book club. G-5 is the hub of activity for the Prescott’s Senior Gathering Place but their activities extend beyond its four walls.
A calendar of monthly options may also include chair yoga, pickleball, and a movie or potluck event.
“It’s a great way to interact with others, make new friends and keep mentally and physically active,” stated one participant.
Prior to the pandemic, they were able to interact with students through pen pals and lunch buddy initiatives.
The Gathering Space opened in January 2017 when the construction of the new high school made space available for Prescott seniors who desired to have a community center to host activities and socialize. After numerous meetings to form a mission statement, an advisory board and four subcommittees (Facilities, Fundraising, Programming and Membership/Publicity), it became a reality.
Community Education Director Penny Peterson provides the oversight of this community outreach program. To date, the program has been funded since 2017 by local grants: City of Prescott, $7,000 (2017) and $2,000 (2019); Prescott Foundation, $3,000; and an Anonymous Donor, $1,000. The Gathering Space provides its own furniture, recreation equipment and volunteer management of the space.
“There is something here for everyone and all are welcome. We keep each other abreast of what is happening in the community and the laughter we share makes my day,” said another senior participant.
