It wasn’t the ending for the Prescott wrestling team that coach Jordan Porier hoped for, but it was definitely something to build upon for the young team.
With the consensus favorite from the Sectional at 220, Joe Schulte, sidelined by an appendicitis attack the week before WIAA Regionals, sophomores Alex Iberg and Sam Murphy represented the Cardinals at the WIAA Sectional Meet at Osceola Saturday.
Neither advanced but they will take some big-stage experience away from the event.
“For Alex Iberg, he gets down here and wrestles and gets that experience. For Sam, it was his second year down here,” said Porier. “It didn’t go exactly as we planned, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. They have that experience now and hopefully it sticks with them and they build from that.” He expects bigger things from his team next year, with a year of experience under their belts.
“The kids got better very single time they stepped on the mat and as a coach that’s all you can ask for,” said Porier. “We’re young. We’re inexperienced, and I think every single kid took a step forward throughout the year. They’re not the same kid from the beginning of the year. That’s all you can ask for.”
