PRESCOTT — Jamie Stutz grew up near Madison, finding a passion in theatre that took him to the University of Minnesota. From there, he graduated with a directing major and creative writing minor.
“I’ve always been creative,” Stutz said. “After I graduated from the university, I just kept writing and continued taking classes at the U because I worked there.”
Stutz eventually took a screenwriting class and collaborated with a teacher to create a screenplay. Stutz then moved to Prescott in 2001, having his first child in 2005.
“Right about that time, I just kind of stopped writing, wanted to kind of raise a family,” Stutz said. “Now that the kids are grown, it’s just something that kind of has been building up over a couple decades.”
As his kids got older, Stutz had the opportunity to dive back into writing, and he is now in the middle of a timeline to release seven books in 18 months. The first three of those books are in the trilogy “The Coherence Spectrum.”
“A philosophical science fiction trilogy that blends political futurism, ethical AI, deconstructed religion, and a straight up Gen X attitude through and through,” the description reads.
Stutz’s first two books of the trilogy are available on amazon.com. The first book in the trilogy, “The Coherence Cascade,” released in March. The second, “The Enhancement Spectrum,” released in early June. Stutz held an event June 7 to thank all of the people who have supported his writing.
“I kind of put it out there to just see what my friends would think in town. Based on that reception, the second book we just decided to get everyone together,” Stutz said. “It was merely to say thank you to folks that I’ve been around with the last couple decades. I’ve really came up in Prescott.”
The finale of the trilogy, “The Hecate Protocol,” is expected to release Sept. 9. On the Sunday of Prescott Daze, Stutz will be hosting an event at Philander’s Grill and Bar. Stutz said his trilogy features some local Prescott stops that adds character for those from the area.
“I’ve been around town so much that people know me from different aspects of my life,” Stutz said. “Those are the parts that I really have enjoyed, is sharing some of these things that exist in Prescott, but over the last 25 years, we’re placing a fictional narrative.”
“I’m hoping there’s a little bit of something from everyone,” Stutz said. “I’d like to say it’s an homage to all of that nerdy stuff we grew up with in the 80’s.”
Stutz has four other books outside of the trilogy coming out, including a book about Jim Thorpe, which was the topic of the screenplay he wrote, making for a true full-circle moment. Stutz is also coming out with a book in June 2027 about Prescott’s rise to girls golf greatness, a team that featured his daughter Rhi winning three State titles.
