Rep. Kreibich column: Bill protecting adults at risk passes

Posted

Last Tuesday, the Assembly passed my bill which provides additional court protections for “adults at risk” and increases penalties for crimes committed against adults at risk. While crime victims over the age of 60 already receive additional protection, this bill extends those protections to adults with a physical or mental disadvantage who are more at risk of experiencing abuse, neglect or financial exploitation.

Sen. Jacque and I introduced this bill because if it deters one crime against an adult at risk, it will have been worth it. I am personally friends with people who have physical and cognitive disabilities. These vulnerable populations deserve more protections in court, and people who harm them deserve harsher sentences. This is a step forward for justice.
