Every session, I send out a Legislative survey to the constituents of the 93rd Assembly District to determine which issues you want me to prioritize in Madison. When the results came out this year, more than 60% of people said cutting taxes was one of their top priorities. With our area still suffering from the effects of inflation, it's understandable that you want to ensure that our state spends responsibly while keeping more money in your wallets.
That is why, since I was elected in 2011, the Republican legislature has passed more than $31 billion in tax cuts. And once again this session, the state found itself with a surplus, this time nearly $7 billion. That is why I voted to fund the priorities of the people of Chippewa Valley while returning the bulk of the surplus back to you. To do this I first voted to reject the governor’s and legislative Democrats' proposals for billions of dollars in new taxes and spending programs. The budget was then rewritten so that your taxes would be reduced by $573. However, because of the governor's powerful veto pen, he struck a few lines and reduced that amount down to $36.
This is money that you would have been able to spend however you wanted, such as on a family vacation, home improvements, or on gas and groceries. The point is that you, not Madison bureaucrats, should decide how to use it most effectively.
Despite the setback, I remained committed to fighting for our area's middle class. This time, I co-authored legislation, and the legislature passed additional income tax cuts, including plans to exempt retirement income for seniors on a fixed income, as well as a bill to raise the cap on a married couple's credit to address marriage penalties in the tax law. However, each of these bills were vetoed, despite the governor's and legislative Democrats' claims that they wanted to help our area's working class.
