Rep. Warren Petryk: Spring legislative update

Posted

The 93rd Assembly District's constituents have benefited greatly from the current two-year legislative session. As your State Representative, I have read and received more than 3,000 messages from you asking about my stance on various topics or requesting assistance navigating the state bureaucracy. In addition, I have distributed almost 250,000 weekly digital newsletters to inform readers about what is happening in Madison. These exchanges have influenced my goals and served as a guide for me as I work to uphold the values of the 93rd Assembly District down in the Capitol.

For this reason, I supported passing a common-sense budget this session that funds our region's priorities. This included allocating significant funds to upgrade our state's transportation infrastructure, which was your top priority from my spring budget survey last year. The $1.5 billion in new funding I supported in the budget will contribute to the reconstruction of the local roads and bridges. Furthermore, additional funding was allocated specifically to support the repair of numerous miles of roads in our area that are heavily used for agriculture.

People also listed tax reduction as their second priority, after repairing our roads. In the Assembly, we passed tax cuts aimed at the state's middle-class families, as well as cuts for the seniors and families having trouble paying for daycare. I will persist in voting in favor of returning our state's surplus to you, despite the governor’s vetoes and Legislative Democrats' obstructions. I believe you know best on how to spend your money rather than retaining it in Madison to expand government bureaucracy.

Additionally, the legislature also focused on bolstering the state's efforts to create jobs. In order to achieve this, the state increased funding for our Youth and Registered Apprenticeship programs, which have a track record of creating jobs and getting our young people the experiences they will need to have a successful career in our state. I also kept voting in favor of funding initiatives that widen the talent pipeline in our state, such as boosting resources to assist individuals with disabilities in pursuing the jobs they want.

These are but a handful of the victories the legislature has accomplished this session. To learn more, look for my Spring Legislative update in your mailbox soon.
