River Falls Community Education is offering a four-week course exploring the history and contemporary experiences of Wisconsin’s 11 Tribal Nations.
Led by veteran educator Jeff Ryan, the course will explore four topics: an introduction to Wisconsin Tribal Nations; the boarding school era and assimilation; treaty rights and the Wisconsin Walleye Wars; and imagery and symbolism. The course will emphasize discussion and analysis of materials.
Ryan brings 38 years of teaching experience and extensive work in Wisconsin First Nations history.
“For centuries, the First Nations peoples of Wisconsin have been an essential part of the story of our state,” Ryan said. “This short course is an opportunity to look beyond what we may already know and learn a bit more about the First Nations communities who have called Wisconsin home for generations, and who remain an important part of Wisconsin today.”
The course will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at River Falls High School. The fee is $14. Registration is available through River Falls Community Education at rflearns.org.
