River Falls Police Department completes Flock Safety Camera System evaluation

Department plans to discontinue use of cameras and technology

RIVER FALLS - The River Falls Police Department has completed its ongoing evaluation of Flock Safety's transparency, contractual practices, and customer support service. The result of that review is a plan to discontinue use of the cameras and technology system in full.

While the technology has contributed to investigative successes, Chief of Police Gordon Young has indicated that the internal review created a loss of confidence in Flock Safety as a service provider.

Effective Oct/ 9, external agency data sharing was disabled. As an additional interim measure, the department will coordinate with Public Works to cover all nine cameras as soon as practical.

Chief Young will submit a memorandum and resolution requesting that the Council support ending the funding for Flock Safety services in the Police Department's 2027 and 2028 budgets.

“Technology can be a valuable tool in law enforcement, but it must be supported by transparency, accountability, and professional service,” said Chief Young. “Maintaining public trust remains a priority for our department.”

The department remains committed to evaluating all department tools responsibly and ensuring its practices reflect the expectations of the community it serves.
