The following incidents were reported to River Falls Police Department May 18-27.
May 18
•At 1:44 p.m., a River Falls High School employee informed police of graffiti found in the lower-level bathroom located by the band practice rooms. The word “Soup” was written in black ballpoint pen on the big bathroom stall wall. The cost of removing it was about $20.
May 19
•Police responded at 7:11 a.m. to 357 High Ridge Road for a dog at large complaint. The complainant told police he was walking near 1164 Bartosh Lane around 5 p.m. He saw a man and a German Shepherd mix sitting in the grass between two large pine trees. The dog allegedly charged him and nipped at his heels. The owner called the dog, but the dog charged a second time, and the complainant fell to the ground, scuffing his knee and elbow. The dog did not bite or scratch the complainant.
May 20
•A stolen vehicle was recovered by police at 5:39 a.m. in the 500 block of Wasson Court. Police observed a 2007 Saturn Outlook with Minnesota plates parked in that block. The plates were run and the vehicle registration showed it was stolen. Police walked around the vehicle, which was covered in moss/mildew, leaves, branches and dirt. The rear windshield wiper was broken off. The officer saw a large tree branch inside the vehicle. The ignition appeared to have been punched and was damaged around the steering wheel area. The seatbelt was wrapped around the steering wheel and another license plate was sitting on the front driver’s seat. Police observed a vehicle in front of the Saturn that had items on its hood. The Saturn was impounded. A witness told police that two people living nearby were associated with the vehicle. Two suspects have been identified.
•At 9:57 a.m., police responded to Main and East Division streets for a two-vehicle crash between John Edward Stein, 59, River Falls, who was driving a 2005 Chevy Malibu, and Anne Marie Moe, 42, Hudson, who was driving a 2019 Chevy Tahoe. Moe said she was stopped at the light on Main and Division streets, facing north on Main. She said two vehicles were in front of her as well when she was rear-ended by Stein, who said the vehicles in front of him were moving and then stopped. Stein was slurring his words and failed field sobriety tests. He was arrested for OWI, possess drug paraphernalia, possession of THC and possession of methamphetamine. The Malibu had disabling damage, while the Tahoe has minor damage. No injuries were reported.
•Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at 11:15 a.m. between Mark Edward Krause, 73, St. Paul, who was driving a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage, and Jerry John Croes, 64, River Falls, who was driving a 2002 Ford Econoline van, on North Main Street near West Division. Krause was allegedly stopped in the roadway slightly south of the Main and Division intersection, facing north. The stop light was red. The light turned green, and Croes, who was behind Krause, kept moving. Krause did not immediately move forward when the light turned green, and Croes rear-ended him. The Mirage had functional damage to the right rear end, while the Ford had minor damage to the front end. No one, including passenger Lynn E. Krause, 70, St. Paul, reported injuries.
•At 9:42 p.m. police were called to the pond on the west side of River Falls High School (818 Cemetery Road) for a partially submerged vehicle in the pond with an unresponsive male in the driver’s seat. Officers attempted to shake
Cory James Kohl, 42, River Falls, awake. He was sweating profusely and his head was bobbing. He was breathing and had a pulse. When police began to pull him out of the car, he awoke. He was disoriented and confused. He was taken to River Falls Area Hospital and the vehicle was towed. Officers later learned that Kohl had been parked in the upper high school parking lot, drove through the grass, down the hill, crossed the paved entrance, went through more grass and ended up in the retaining pond. Kohl told police he had been at his sister’s boyfriend’s house and was trying to look at a map on his phone, which is why he crashed. A half-empty bottle of Fireball whiskey was located in the vehicle, which belongs to his sister. Kohl was arrested for OWIseventh/ eighth/ninth.
May 21
•At 2:51 a.m. police responded to 151 Kusilek St. for a vandalism complaint where the complainant had detained one juvenile. When police arrived, a Jeep Wrangler was parked down the street. Eggs were scattered in the road and flour was dumped on the driveway, in the front yard, and on the front steps. The complainant told police he had caught one of the juveniles involved and had him detained. The complainant said last year on “Senior Boys’ Night,” he’d been hit pretty hard, so he stayed up late this year to watch for pranks. He said around 2 a.m., a group of four vehicles with about eight kids drove past the house several times with the lights off. The kids eventually got out and dumped corn and potatoes in the front yard and spray painted the basketball hoop and a penis on the front steps. After the kids left, he was able to get the spray paint off the steps. Then at around 2:45 a.m., another group returned and threw flour at the front door and yard. He confronted them and detained one kid by “bear hugging” him and bringing him inside. A suspect vehicle was pulled over on Emily Circle; three juveniles were inside. The family decided not to pursue charges. They requested police inform the principal to see if school punishments could be put in place. All involved were warned for criminal damage to property and released.
•At 8:30 a.m., the RFHS principal notified police of graffiti in the boys’ locker room, that had occurred overnight. Someone had drawn a penis in black permanent marker on the floor. The paint was damaged when it was removed, so the estimated damage cost is $30. Video footage revealed four students enter the locker room at 9:19 p.m. on May 20, then leave about one minute later. Police spoked with two of the students identified in the video, and they denied having anything to do with the graffiti.
•At 11:44 a.m., police provided mutual aid to PCSO and SCSO at county roads F and M for a three-vehicle head-on crash with injury. Ryan Anna Murphy, 40, Afton, Minn., died at the scene. Susan M. Pierce, 61, River Falls, was taken to Regions Hospital with undisclosed injuries.
May 22
•At 1:20 p.m., police spoke to a complainant by phone about a stolen motorcycle. The complainant told the officer that between 4 a.m. and 1 p.m. on May 22, someone stole his 2006 Black Yamaha YZF600 motorcycle out of its parking stall at 1063 E. Cascade Ave. The motorcycle was valued at $7,000. The key was not with the motorcycle and the steering was locked. It was also blocked in by his roommate’s car, so to steal it, it would have had to been lifted. PCSO recovered the motorcycle at 12 p.m. May 24 and RFPD brought it to the police station.
•At 8:08 p.m., officers provided mutual aid to SCSO with a rolling domestic incident. SCSO was trying to locate a blue Hyundai Sonata and a suspect involved in an argument with a woman. Logan J. Traynor, 23, River Falls, was located driving at Union and Main streets and subsequently arrested by SCSO for OWI and domestic disorderly conduct.
May 23
•At 1:06 a.m., police were called to 128 N. Main St. for a man outside trying to start fights with people. As police approached the man outside Maverick’s, they heard him call someone a communist. He appeared to be extremely intoxicated. He told police his name was Roger and began walking southbound across Main Street. Police were able to stop him at 107 N. Main St. He refused to identify himself or talk to officers. He was later identified as Roger Jesse Huerta, 72, Hudson. Police interviewed Maverick’s staff and witnesses, who said Huerta often causes problems and they just wanted him removed. While speaking with Huerta, he allegedly yelled in officers’ faces and once postured a fighting stance. When one officer grabbed Huerta’s left wrist to attempt to gain control of him as he was wobbling and agitated, Huerta grabbed the officer’s right wrist and left scratch marks. The man calmed down and provided his first name and middle initial, but became angry again when asked for his last name. He told police he was boing to beat them and got into a fighting stance and raised both fists. As he became increasingly uncooperative and agitated, he was arrested for disorderly conduct, battery to law enforcement, threats to law enforcement and resisting or obstructing an officer. He was taken to Pierce County Jail, where he became more upset. He accused police of being prejudiced because he is Mexican and would not cooperate with jail staff.
•Police responded to a three-vehicle crash at 3:05 p.m. on Highway 29 near 965th Street in River Falls between a 2013 Ford Focus, driven by Emma G. Ducklow, 17, River Falls; a 2010 Audi Q5, driven by Tessa A. Davis, 17, Hudson; and a 2005 Toyota Corolla, driven by Jozylin H. O’Brien, 17, River Falls. Ducklow was traveling westbound in the 800 block of East Cemetery Road, and Davis was directly behind her. O’Brien was directly behind Davis, all traveling in the same direction. O’Brien said she did not know her brakes were defective and when the cars in front of her began slowing, she couldn’t stop, so she tried to move into the center turn lane to avoid a crash. She then moved back into her own lane and struck Davis’ vehicle from behind, causing the Audi to be pushed into the Focus’ rear. The Focus had minor damage, while the Audi and Toyota had disabling damage and had to be towed. Ducklow and her passenger reported no apparent injuries. Davis, who was alone in her vehicle, reported no apparent injuries. O’Brien had no apparent injuries, though her two passengers reported possible injuries. One girl was taken to River Falls Area Hospital.
•At 9:57 p.m. police responded to 1450 S. Wasson Lane, #50, for an attempted burglary. The complainant said a Black male, about 30 years old, wearing a gray hoodie and flat brimmed cap had kicked in the front door and was asking for a woman. The suspect told the complainant he would give him $200 for the broken door and ran away toward the Highway 65/Cemetery Road roundabout. Police had received a report of a man matching the suspect’s description earlier that day wandering around Econo Lodge. Police made contact with the suspect’s girlfriend, who said she didn’t know where he was. Another trailer park resident was interviewed, and said the suspect had come to the trailer earlier asking to rest. The suspect, a 40-year-old River Falls man, kept pacing the trailer and soon left. The witness said the suspect soon reappeared but was out of breath, got in his vehicle and left. The case is still under investigation.
May 24
•At 11:53 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle crash at Quarry Road and North Main Street between a 2010 Buick Lucerne, driven by
Taylor Ann Marie Menzynski, 21, River Falls, and a 2019 Ford Escape, driven by Emily Marie Pierson, 40, River Falls. Menzynski was heading north on Main Street approaching the Quarry Road intersection. Pierson, who was in front of Menzynski, was slowing/stopping due to traffic congestion from a funeral escort. Menzynski was not able to stop in time and rearended Pierson’s vehicle. No injuries were reported and both vehicles had minor damage.
•At 2:24 p.m., police were notified by the Hudson Hospital ER of a dog bite that had allegedly occurred at 215 N. Winter St. The victim, a postal worker, told police he was approaching the residence to deliver mail and noticed a dog in the screened porch. The dog was pushing hard on the door. As the postal worker was walking away, the dog, a Chow mix, got out and bit him in the back of the leg. The dog stayed in the yard as the postal worker left. No one was home at the time.
May 25
•At 12:15 a.m., police provided mutual aid to SCSO at 339 Soo Line Road in Hudson. A man there had reported that people were working on his residence and had abducted his wife. He also accused the workers of pumping poisonous gas into his home. He told police he had shot at the workers with a .40 caliber handgun. While police were responding, he remained on the line and told them people were walking around his house, that there was a blinding light in the kitchen and that he refused to put the gun down until police arrived. He said he shot at people on his roof twice, that children in the house were aliens from space and that his wife talked to the aliens. Officers were able to safely take the man into custody. The man’s wife said he had gotten a head injury last week due to a fall and had been acting strange. No one else was located in the house.
•At 6:04 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle crash at Main and Union streets between a 2018 Ford Focus, driven by Amanda Sara Suter, 37, River Falls, and a 2011 Kia Sorento, driven by Tracy A. Klein, 37, River Falls. Klein was traveling north on Main Street and observed a pedestrian waiting to cross, so she stopped to let him across. Suter, who was behind Klein, said she looked down for a second and when she looked back up Klein was stopped in front of her. She was not able to stop in time. Both passengers reported no injuries. The Ford has functional damage, while the Kia had minor damage.
May 26
•A 14-year-old juvenile was arrested for disorderly conduct after an incident at 3:42 p.m. May 25 at Meyer Middle School. One student allegedly said it would be funny to shoot another student and made finger gun motions at that student. Police conducted multiple interviews May 26 and reviewed camera footage.
•At 9:46 a.m., Mary Jo Kenall, 56, River Falls, was arrested for OWI after hitting multiple vehicles and an apartment building at 1460 E. Cemetery Road. According to witnesses, Kenall, who was driving a 2009 Honda CRV, pulled into a parking spot at the apartment, then took off to the right, striking first one car, then another, before hitting a third, all of which were legally parked. She then backed up and ran into the apartment complex, where the vehicle got stuck in the entrance of the building. Kenall told police she had been returning from the grocery store and that her vehicle had been “acting weird.” She said the vehicle wouldn’t stop and automatically went into reverse. She failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the hospital for stomach pains. All vehicles involved had minor damage.
•At 5:02 p.m., a complainant reported a 2007 Buick Lucerne as stolen from 528 N. Pearl St. The suspect is a 35-year-old Chippewa Falls man who allegedly initially had permission to drive the vehicle on May 23 but did not bring it back.
•At 5:11 p.m., police were called to 129 Emory Circle for a catnapping complaint. The complainant told police his one-year-old Anglo Manx cat is missing. He usually keeps it on a leash in the backyard because it sprays. It’s not neutered. He last saw the cat at about 8 p.m. May 25 and first noticed it missing at 6:20 a.m. May 26. The cat is worth about $1,200, he said.
•At 5:34 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle crash at 115 N. Second St. between a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by Amanda Nicole Cruz, 26, Prescott, and a 2017 Dodge Ram, owned by Alexander E. Miller, River Falls. Cruz was backing out of a parking stall in the public parking lot and struck the rear trailer hitch of the unoccupied Ram. The Nissan had minor damage, while the Ram had none.
May 27
•At 3:55 a.m., police responded to a deer vs. vehicle crash on Highway 35 just south of Quarry Road. A 2009 Chevy Impala, driven by
David J. Huppert, 60, Bay City, struck a deer and had to be towed due to disabling damage. Huppert reported no apparent injuries.
•Police responded to 1658 Southridge Road at 6:39 a.m. for a physical domestic incident.
Travis L. Castonguay, 48, River Falls, was arrested for domestic disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to Pierce County Jail.
•At 11:55 a.m., police responded to River Falls High School for an upset student, who threw a chair against a wall. The student’s father was contacted and picked up the student from school.
•At 4:09 p.m., police responded to 100 E. Elm St. for a damaged stop sign in the alley between South Main and Second streets, off of East Elm Street. The top bolt had been removed and the sign was upside down. It was also bent. There are no suspects.
•Police responded to a deer vs. car crash at 8:22 p.m. on Highway 29. A 2016 Chevy Traverse, driven by Lynn Charmyne Wickenhouser, 76, Hastings, Minn., struck a deer. She had no injuries and the vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.
