River Falls, Prescott vie for state championship

After completing play in the St. Croix Valley Baseball League Championship tournament last weekend, six teams within the league continued on in the Wisconsin Baseball Association District Playoffs. The River Falls Fighting Fish, Plum City Blues, Prescott Pirates, Hudson River Rats, Spring Valley Hawks, and Osceola Braves represented the SCVBL in the opening rounds of the WBA District Playoffs.

Of the six teams, only two will be advancing onto the WBA State Tournament: The Pirates and the Fighting Fish. The Fighting Fish will play against Marshfield in Marshfield at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 while the Pirates will also go to Marshfield to play against the Eau Claire Cavaliers in the second game that evening at 9:30 p.m.

If the Fighting Fish win their game against Marshfield, they will be set to play against Holmen at 4:30 p.m. in Marshfield on Saturday, Aug. 22. If the Fighting Fish lose their game against Marshfield, they will play against Holmen too, only earlier that day at 10:30 a.m.

If the Pirates win their game against the Eau Claire Cavaliers, they will take on the Spooner Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. in Marshfield on Saturday, Aug. 22. If the Pirates lose their game against Eau Claire, they will play against the Cardinals at 1:30 p.m. earlier that day.

The Pirates shared a recap on their WBA District Playoff games on Facebook, looking ahead to the WBA State Tournament: “A 15-1 win over Rib Lake yesterday qualifies us to move onto the state round of WBA Playoffs! Games next weekend will be split between two locations, Merrill and Marshfield.”

The Fighting Fish also shared their excitement via social media on being able to participate in the WBA State Tournament for another year: “Fish win 15-0 today in their final home game at First National Bank of River Falls Field to advance to the WBA Finals next week in Marshfield/Merrill. (We have already started packing!) A final big thanks to Kickles, Simply Staffing, Inc., and all the other local businesses who sponsored the WBA district tournament for us this weekend – also special shout outs to the River Falls Swim Club, Rotary, 13AAA baseball team, and RF Youth Hockey for volunteering in the concession stand.”

The final game for the WBA State Tournament is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22 in Marshfield and with the bracket layout, there’s a possibility the Fighting Fish and Pirates will face off for the state title.
