The River Falls girls soccer team finished the week on a high note after falling to Hudson, 7-0, Tuesday. The Wildcats blanked Rice Lake by a 3-0 score Thursday and easily handled Onalaska, 6-1, on the road Friday.
River Falls is 2-1-1 in Big Rivers Conference play, 5-1-1 overall. The Wildcats have two regular season league matches remaining, as they host Menomonie Thursday at 7 p.m. and travel to Chippewa Falls to wrap up Big Rivers play Tuesday.
Coach Charles Conley sees a lot of positives in this year’s team.
“We only have one loss and every other game has been a pretty convincing win for the most part. We took it to a D1 powerhouse program in DC Everest (7-3 May 8). We put ourselves in a great position for seeding with a 6-1 win at Onalaska. The only blemish on our record was a hiccup game at Hudson. Otherwise, we are proud of where we sit and what's to come in the future,” said Conley.
He said the team is looking for continued improvement.
“We are looking to shore some things up defensively. Even in games we have won, we have given up a few soft goals and of course our true test at Hudson was a seven- goal outburst. We need to come together defensively, familiarize ourselves with the system and each other. We are also looking to make our attack more clean and crisp. We have seen much success, yet have kept teams in the game longer than we should and we can finish up some of the opportunities we are creating,” said Conley.
He is looking for his team to be at its best for WIAA playoffs.
“We want to continue to improve and put ourselves in position for a nice run in the playoffs. Getting the top seed is not good enough! We want to be playing our best soccer at playoff time and prove we belong in the upper echelon of teams in the state. We only have one loss, to a very good Hudson team, we would like to even up the battle when we see them again. For this to happen we need to shore some things up defensively and quicken up our attacking game,” said Conley.
