The Prescott wrestling team had a good day Saturday, crowning one Middle Border Conference champion in Joe Schulte while Sophomore Sam Murphy finished as runner-up of the 132-pound weight class.

Hosted by New Richmond High School, the Middle Border Conference meet proved once again to be a competitive affair.

Freshman Benny Olson finished in fourth place at 106 pounds. Olson lost to fellow freshman Cole Braasch of Baldwin- Woodville by way of fall. 126-pound freshman Shane Butler was pinned by Saint Croix Central’s David Olson to finish in sixth place Murphy lost to Amery’s Jordan Penard by way of fall 3:56 seconds after the championship match started.

Alex Holt, wrestling at 145 pounds, finished in fifth place after the sophomore lost a 10-5 decision to Aaron Schmidt of Osceola.

Senior Isaiah Tulip lost the fifth-place match to Osceola’s Chris Fugate by a 13-11 decision at 152 pounds.

Schulte won the 220-pound championship when he stepped onto the mat with Ellsworth’s Kyle Anschutz. The senior scored a 12-2 major decision victory over the neighboring sophomore.

“Joe just continually gets better every single day,” Coach Jordan Poirier said about Prescott’s newest Middle Border Conference Champion. “There are no wasted days when he steps into the wrestling room. He is always trying to improve in every single position.”

“It feels good. It feels really good,” Schulte said about the third consecutive crowning. “It felt good to come out and get some work in. The plan is to keep working hard and keep winning matches.”

Shawn Thomason, wrestling at 285 pounds, won the fifthplace match against Adam Malstrom of Baldwin-Woodville with a pin 4:32 into the match.

Coach Jordan Poirier was impressed with how his team showed up ready to wrestle Saturday morning.

“Everyone wrestled really well all day. The wrestlers competed in every single position and didn’t give up anything with ease,” Poirier stated.

The Cardinal wrestlers’ growth has been evident this season.

“They have learned how to compete with everyone. This team is really young with seven underclassmen but they have not wrestled like it. They expect to go out and compete with everyone,” Poirier lamented.

With the regional meet coming up this weekend at Arcadia High School, the WIAA high school season is nearing its end. “Our goals are to have wrestlers competing in Madison in three weeks,” Poirier said about their goals for the postseason.
