With one week of games remaining in the regular season for the St. Croix Valley Baseball League, the standings show which teams will advance to the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball playoffs in August.
The River Falls Fighting Fish remain at the top of the standings with an 18-2 record on the season and a 11-1 record against league opponents. The Fighting Fish kept up their league dominance last weekend, winning both their games against the New Richmond Millers 5-0 Saturday night, and 11-5 Sunday afternoon against the Elmwood Expos. The Fighting Fish won the WBA State Championship in 2020 and look to repeat for the first time in team history, and get their third state title overall. Their first was in 2011.
The Prescott Pirates have turned around from an early season slump to maintain second place in the league with a 9-4 record against league opponents. The Pirates won both their games this weekend, 6-1 over the Ellsworth Hubbers Saturday night and a 9-2 victory over the Plum City Blues on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates have not had a WBA State Championship since 2014.
The Spring Valley Hawks find themselves still holding the third-place spot in the league after losing both their games this past weekend. The Hawks played the Elmwood Expos on Saturday and lost to them 9-4. Sunday’s loss was a high-scoring and much closer score against the Metro Kings, losing 12-10. The Hawks’ record currently sits at 8-4 in the league and 13-8 overall.
The Bay City Bombers split their two games this weekend, losing on Saturday afternoon to the Plum City Blues 7-1 and winning on Sunday against the Ellsworth Hubbers, 12-3. The Bombers’ record in the league currently sits at 6-7 and 7-9 overall. The Bombers resume play on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Red Wing Aces on the road.
The Plum City Blues have found themselves at an even .500 record in the month of July going 2-2 in their four games played. This past weekend, the Blues won their home game Saturday afternoon against the Bombers 7-1 during Plum City Summerfest. Sunday, the Blues hosted the Pirates at home and lost 9-2. The Blues’ league record currently sits at 5-7 and 79 overall.
The Elmwood Expos had a series split this weekend as well, winning their game against the Hawks Saturday 9-4 and losing their game Sunday to the Fighting Fish 11-5. The Expos are 69 overall this season and 4-7 against division opponents. The Expos have not been finalists for the WBA State title since 2016, and will play their final two games of the season this weekend at home against the Hudson River Rats and Plum City Blues.
The Ellsworth Hubbers have not been having the best month, losing all four of their games in July. The Hubbers have one game remaining on the season against the Fighting Fish on Saturday in River Falls. The Hubbers’ record within the league sits at 4-10 and their overall record on the year is 4-12.
