RIVER FALLS — The School District of River Falls was recently honored by the Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) with a Spectrum Award of Excellence for its work in school communications. The district received the award for its Teacher Recruitment Video Series, a project with a unique local connection: it was filmed and produced by River Falls High School alumnus Dakota Nyberg.
WSPRA presented the awards at its annual conference held Nov. 12-14. The Spectrum Awards recognize high-quality school communication efforts across Wisconsin. Entries are judged by public relations professionals from across the nation, ranging from New York to California.
Hometown Talent & Authentic Storytelling The award-winning video series, launched last spring, featured current teachers highlighting the district's supportive environment and the River Falls community.
“Dakota’s ideas were impressive,” says Jenny Ames, Director of Community Education and Communications. “He successfully captured the warmth and unique strengths of our district.”
The project has played a key role in the district's recruitment strategy.
"We feel these authentic, unscripted videos of our teachers speaking from the heart about what it's like to work in the River Falls School District motivates candidates to apply for positions in our district," remarks Nate Schurman, Director of Human Resources and Leadership Development.
Nyberg, a 2020 graduate of River Falls High School, was excited to be a part of the project:
"The teachers, programs, and opportunities I had as a Wildcat played a huge role in preparing me for future success," Nyberg said. "Having the chance to work with the district to help bring in more wonderful staff was an exciting and full-circle experience."
The Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) is a state affiliate of the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). Its mission is to expand the capacity of its members to provide effective communication management to strengthen educational opportunities for all students.
