The Prescott Cardinals lived up to their billing as they walked away with top team honors at the St. Croix Central Invitational tournament. Sophomore Ava Salay finished second with a solid round of 82 to lead the Cardinals and juniors Liz Rohl and Jenna Hensch shot 87 and 89 respectively as the Cardinals cruised to an eight stroke victory over New Richmond. Heinsch and Rohl had their career low rounds on what Coach Chad Salay called a “very difficult course with the high winds” and called their performance “the key to our victory.”_ Prescott bested not only conference rival New Richmond, but also easily outshot third place St. Croix Central by a robust 32 strokes._ Coach Salay also lauded the play of Maddie Reiter who made her first career varsity start and played very well. Additionally, the Cardinal Varsity Reserves (JV) finished ahead of all but 2 of the MBC varsity teams, NR and SCC in the tournament._ The Head Coaching debut of Prescott Cardinal football coach Jordan Hansen begins this week._ The Somerset High School graduate and Winona State Alumnus will welcome up to 60 players this week as the team prepares for what will be a truncated season. _ Coach Hansen and his charges will scrimmage at Amery on September 19th with the opener scheduled for September 25th at Baldwin-Woodville._ Check out the Wisconsin Sports Network internet sit for the list of school that are playing fall sports and those that have moved to the spring for the 2020-2021 school year. for the Cardinals as they and the rest of the Middle Border Conference look to unseat defending champion Osceola._ Tyler Loucks and Eric Korfhage were the top finishers for the Prescott Cardinals boys cross country team last week at the St. Croix Central Cross Country Invitational. The boys placed 4th in the eight team meet with New Richmond finishing atop the leaderboard._ For the Cardinal girls top finishers were 11th grader Amanda Auleceims, and 9th grader Ava Budworth. Osceola finished in first and Prescott placed 5th in the first meet of the season._ Fans of high school and college athletics certainly should know the name of the late Gordie Gillespie. A member of 17 Halls of Fame, Gillespie won more games than any college baseball coach in history amassing an overall record of 1,893-952. His success also extended to the gridiron. While coaching football for over two decades at Joliet Catholic High School in Chicago,_ Gillespie’s teams finished with an overall record of 222-54, including five state championships._ On the basketball court, Gillespie played for Hall of Fame Coach Ray Meyer at DePaul and also_ at the University of Illinois._The praise and plaudits Gillespie has received over the years from those who played for the iconic Chicago native are endless. Prescott High School alumni Nick Thoen and Nick Johnson were extremely fortunate to play for the iconic Gillespie at Ripon College from 2000-2003._ WBCA Hall of Fame Coach Steve Block was a long admirer of Gillespie and always spoke of him with great adulation._ Perhaps what was most extraordinary about Gillespie was his ability to give others credit._ Those who were fortunate enough to hear him speak heard Gillespie speak glowingly of others and applaud the work of people who helped him along the way._ When Gillespie was inducted into the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003 one area coach remarked “I couldn’t even tell he was being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Listening to him speak made me feel like I was being inducted.”_ Today, coaches would do well to give credit to others, to those who came before them, to those who laid the groundwork, to those who helped make things possible._ Today, many coaches at all levels today would do well to follow the example of Gordie Gillespie._ Bowhunters are undoubtedly chomping at the bit as they ready themselves for the fast approaching archery season on September 12th. Also opening on the 12th are fall turkey and ruffed grouse seasons, unless you live in Zone B then your grouse season opens next month. When it comes to migratory birds best to check out the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website at https://dnr.wi.gov/news/releases/ article/?id=5238 Headshaker of week. On a local jaunt to an area trout stream I came across a couple empty “Walt’s Crawlers” containers along the stream bed. It is the trout fishing equivalent of throwing your trash out the window as you drive along the country’s highways and byways._ Leaving nightcrawler containers along the Trimbelle or any river…it’s a headshaker._
