From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: The early catch and release season for trout began last Saturday and runs until May 5, 2023. During this time, anglers are invited to fish for Wisconsin’s four inland trout species but are reminded that all trout caught will need to be immediately released. When the general inland hook and line season opens on May 6, 2023, anglers may harvest these species while following bag limit regulations and length requirements. Additionally, the DNR is accepting applications for the Angler Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (Angler R3) grant program. Funding from the grant program is used to help grow the number of anglers in Wisconsin and expand angling activities. Cost-sharing funds can be awarded to individuals or community-based organizations, Wisconsin tribes, universities and schools. The deadline to submit grant applications is Feb. 15, 2023.

When it comes to the Wisconsin outdoors, there are few things more aesthetically pleasing than walking along the banks of a trout stream or sauntering through the woods on a sunny October afternoon.

Headshaker of the week: As a person who likes to keep score when attending basketball or baseball games, I was extremely disappointed there was no hard copy game roster for the recent Holiday Tournament in Hastings. As I purchased my ticket, the friendly ticket takers said team rosters could be accessed by taking a picture of a QR code. Perhaps there are others reading this who would also rather read an actual newspaper instead of a virtual copy on a lap top or iPad. The same could be said for reading a book and literally turning the pages rather than scrolling on a reading tablet. Give me a roster I can hold onto, peruse during the game, and use as a scoresheet. So print those rosters for those of us who were born in the mid to late 20th century. Not doing so is a headshaker.
