Condolences to Prescott Assistant Baseball Coach Duane Miller on the passing of his father Romaine this last week._ Romaine and his wife Joyce were married for 71 years and had nine children. _ Duane Miller has been a baseball fixture in Prescott for well over a decade._ A Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year, Miller has coached both during the spring and summer in Prescott since 2005. All the best to the Miller family at this time._ Parker Nielsen and West Texas A& M won their 4th straight Lone Star Conference Basketball championship last week and will receive an automatic postseason bid._ At 15-2 overall and ranked in the top 10 all season, the Buffaloes will find out later this week where and who they will play in the opening round of the NCAA Division 2 tournament._ Haylee Yaegar and the UW-Stout Blue Devils were eliminated by the UW-Whitewater Warhawks last week in the WIAC conference tournament. _ Yaeger, a sophomore, ended the season as the leading scorer for the Blue Devils and was second on the team in rebounding._ UW-Oshkosh defeated Whitewater in the championship game last week._ UW-Platteville defeated UW-Lacrosse in the Men’s tournament. From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources… The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will begin selling 2021 bonus turkey harvest authorizations on Monday, March 15, with a designated sales date for each zone.
Previously known as leftover permits, bonus harvest authorizations are available for purchase online through GoWild.Wi.Gov and at all license agents. Sales begin at 10 a.m. and run through midnight each day. Instructions for how to purchase a spring turkey bonus authorizations in Go Wild are available here._ Bonus harvest authorizations are $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. Both residents and non-residents will have equal opportunities for purchase.
The WIAA recently released its plan for 8 man football conference realignment for next season._ Currently there are 49 schools planning on playing 8 man football next season with the smallest school being Valley Christian School of Osceola with an enrollment of 39 students to largest school Chequamegon/ Mercer/ Butternut with an enrollment of 351._ Around the country there are 30 states that play 8 man football._ Additionally, a handful of states play 6 man high school football. They include Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, and Wyoming, and in parts of Canada. And finally, _ Minnesota and a handful of other states also play 9 man football each fall._ Both the Prescott High School baseball and softball teams will have from 30 to 40 players out for this._ The Prescott Boys and Girls track teams will have similar numbers and_ the boy’s golf team expects to have no fewer than 10 golfers hitting the links for Head Coach Jay Bartsch this spring.__ After more than a decade hiatus NCAA affiliated college baseball returns to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire._ First year Head Coach Charles Bolden is a native of Illinois._ Interestingly enough, Bolden played for legendary coach Gordie Gillespie at. St. Francis College in Joliet, Illinois._ Cardinal baseball fans are well aware that Wisconsin All State and College All Americans Nick Johnson and Nick Thoen played for Gillespie at Ripon College._ Blugold Head Coach Bolden also played professionally in the Frontier League for the Rockford River Hawks (now the Aviators), the same team Johnson played for three years._ The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Clinic will be hosting its annual state clinic on March 12th and 13th._ Speakers include former Major League Curtis Granderson, former Major League umpire Tim Tschida, and current Major League pitching coach Derek Johnson of the Cincinnati Reds._ The North Dakota State Bison split their four game series with the Northern Colorado Bears and will head to Dayton University in Ohio this weekend to take on the Flyers._ Peter Brookshaw hit his first home run of the season in the top of the 1st as the Bison won the season finale by a score of 10-1. Brookshaw, a 2018 Prescott Alumnus, heads into this week hitting .350 on the season and leads the Bison in hits and runs batted in. North Dakota State has an overall record of 7-3 this spring._ Headshaker of the week. And so it begins._ Short-form video content company Overtime announced Thursday that it is launching a professional basketball league that will compensate high schoolaged players, taking kids away from playing both high school and collegiate basketball. Overtime will launch the league in September, targeting top-ranked players ages 16 to 18 who are willing to give up remaining high school eligibility and future college eligibility to earn six figures. This sorry state of affairs has its_ roots in one predatory acronym…..you guessed it – AAU.__
