It has been a difficult time for NCAA athletes and North Dakota State infielder and Cardinal alumnus Pete Brookshaw is no exception. A two-sport All-State athlete in high school, Brookshaw continues to work out daily at home and at a local Snap Fitness. “It’s been challenging, but I have been able to do quite a bit,” says Brookshaw. “I have been doing a lot of hitting off the tee, playing a lot of catch with my brothers and fielding a lot of ground balls in the neighborhood.” When the 2020 season ended Brookshaw was the team leader in runs batted in and triples and tied for the team lead in runs scored. Brookshaw plans on accepting another year of eligibility for the Bison next year and hopes to play some ball yet this summer. The two time WBCA Division II Player of Year says his arm “feels great” and that working with weighted baseball has really been beneficial as well as a weight training program that has helped him hit with more power.
The Prescott CAB Company has named Riley Anfinson as this year’s winner of the Dallas Eggers Academic Scholarship. The CAB Company has awarded over $10,000 in academic scholarships for well over a decade.
The National Federation of High Schools held its annual meeting last month and made some changes among them including coach conduct during games. Beginning next year, high school basketball rules will further clarify when a contest is to be forfeited, including if a qualified individual is not present to coach. The NFHS also amended to clarify that an official is not required to provide a warning to a coach before a technical foul is given. Bravo – no reason for one adult to give another adult a warning about their behavior during an athletic contest whose entire focus should be young people. Also, a proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock as well as a proposal to allow a shot clock by state adoption were not approved. Hurrah. This is not college or professional basketball and there is no need for a shot clock. If that horrific change is ever made, it will continue to blur the lines between high school sports and those at the college and professional level.
If you enjoyed high school sports and have wondered how you can get 'Back in the Game' why not try officiating. Officials are needed in all sports throughout the state of Wisconsin. Licensing will open May 1, 2020 for the 2020-21 school year. A WIAA official’s license is good from Aug. 1 to July 31 and must be renewed yearly. The application can be completed online along with payment. Ask any Wisconsin Athletic Director in the state of Wisconsin if there is a need for more officials.
Mike Lytle, Bill Brookshaw, and the rest of the Prescott Pirates baseball team are holding out hope for some baseball in July. Rumors are that a nine game, truncated league schedule is being planned in the event games can resume at Firehall Field this summer.
The Prescott CAB Company has plans to plant lilac bushes outside the outfield fence. It also appears new netting and padding will be added soon to the fence frames in front of the dugouts at Firehall Field.
