Prescott Sophomores Alex Iberg and Sam Murphy advanced to this weekends WIAA Division 2 Sectional Wrestling Tournament in Osceola. Iberg (14-8) will wrestle sophomore Taedon Nichols (36-3) from Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Sir e and Murphy (25-11) will grapple sophomore Carson Church (21-3) from Medford. Both Murphy and Iberg finished in second place at last Saturday’s regional tournament in Arcadia.
Congratulations to Prescott Cardinal girls basketball team and Head Coach Rob Radloff on winning and the Middle Border Conference Championship. It is the first conference championship for the girls basketball team in almost 20 years.
The Prescott Cardinal girls basketball team will open tournament play at home Friday, February 28th at 7:00 pm. Prescott will host the winner of the game between #7 seed Nekoosa and #10 seed Black River Falls. The Nekoosa Papermakers (10-10) are members of the South Central Conference and the Black River Falls Tigers (416) are members of the Coulee Conference.
In the other half of the regional bracket #3 West Salem (12-8) will play the winner of the game between #6 seed Gale-Ettrick-Trempeleau (812) and #11 seed Mauston (012). The regional championship will be played on Saturday, February 29th and will be hosted by the top remaining seed. The regional winners will then play in the sectional semi-final hosted by Altoona High School on Thursday, March 5th. The Sectional Championship will be held on Saturday, March 7th at Baldwin-Woodville High School.
The top seed in the Baldwin- Woodville Sectional is Arcadia (17-3) and most likely will face Elk Mound (15-5) in the regional championship and a chance to advance to the sectional semi-final in Altoona.
In the northern part of the sectional #7 ranked and unbeaten St. Croix Falls (20-0) grabbed the top seed with the Northwestern Wildcats (17-3) getting the #2 seed, and the Bloomer Blackhawks (17-4) grabbing the #3 seed. The regional winners of the northern part of the sectional will play their sectional semi-final game at Amery High School on Thursday, March 5th.
Prescott and Arcadia both entered this weekend are both ranked #10 in the latest Wisconsin Sports Network Division III State poll.
Seeding meeting for the Cardinal boys basketball team will be held this weekend.
Prescott guard Isabella Lenz joined Parker Nielsen last Friday as she scored her 500th this season. It makes the first time in Cardinal basketball history players from both the boys and the girls teams scored 500 points in a single season. Speaking of Nielsen, the senior will surpass 1,500 career points this week.
The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association held its 50th Annual Coaching Clinic this past weekend in Madison, Wisconsin, Curiously, only three of the eight Middle Border Conference Head Baseball Coaches attended the popular annual event.
According to the WBCA Yearbook includes the top ranked teams in each division. Perennial power Sun Prairie is the top ranked team in Division I. In Division II Catholic Memorial occupies the top spot. According to the WBCA the top ranked team in Division III is Lake Country Lutheran, and in Division IV the top ranked team is the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds.
Speaking of baseball Peter Brookshaw his North Dakota State Bision teammates open the season with a 3-1 victory over the Hawaii Rainbows. Brookshaw, a 2018 Prescott alumnus and two time 1st Team All State Selection in baseball, finished 1-3 with an RBI as the bison won the season opener.
Those were the days…Years ago one of the best publications of sports afficionados was the Sporting News. The weekly newspaper was the source of all things athletics in the realm of professional and collegiate sports. Established in 1886, TSN, as it has came to be known, became the dominant American publication covering baseball. It later expanded its coverage to most other major U.S. sports. For much of its history, the black-andwhite newsprint publication was considered the place serious sports fans went to follow their teams. The Sporting News ceased it’s print publication in 2013, ending an era where trips to the mailbox were highlighted by a newspaper that brought so much joy to subscribers. Those were the days….
