It’s another conference and regional championship for the Prescott girls’ golf team and Head Coach Chad Salay. The #1 ranked Cardinals hope the results of this week’s sectional tournament at Clifton Highlands ends in another trip to the WIAA State Tournament.

The Prescott Cardinal volleyball team improved to 27-9 on the season after a third-place finish in the Amery Invitational this past weekend. Prescott rolled to victories over Spring Valley, Siren, and defeated the Unity Eagles twice. The only blemish was a loss to #10 ranked Webster in pool play. Head Coach Tracey Budworth and her charges have three Middle Border Conference matches remaining and are a game behind conference leading Osceola. On Thursday, the Cardinals will travel to Altoona to take on the Rails and close out conference play next Tuesday when they host first-place Osceola.

This past week Travis Wilson of the Wisconsin Sports Network broke down possible scenarios for the fast-approaching WIAA football playoffs. There will be a total of 224 teams that will qualify in the seven-division tournament field. Through week seven there are 127 teams that have qualified for the postseason. Wilson reports there are 126 teams hoping to qualify over the next two weeks. This Friday the Prescott Cardinals travel to Ellsworth to take on the Panthers and Somerset travels to Amery. At this point, all three teams are considered “bubble” teams by Wilson. Four conference wins in the Middle Border assure teams of making the playoffs. However, three conference victories keep the hope alive.

From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources…The DNR reminds hunters to prepare for the opening of several hunting and trapping seasons in October. And this Saturday and Sunday the Youth Deer Hunt opens as does the hunt for Hunters with Disabilities. Be sure to check the department website for hunting dates and regulations.

Baldwin-Woodville quarterback Cal Smith threw for 216 yards and ran for 134 yards in Friday’s win over Prescott. The senior signal caller has now thrown 19 touchdown passes and rushed for 657 yards and 10 touchdowns. Smith is also an outstanding pitcher on the baseball team.

Hmmm…Talk continues about the possibility of adding another school to the Middle Border Conference. The possibility includes schools from the Heart of the North Conference, the Dunn-St. Croix, and the Cloverbelt. Stay tuned. More and more schools across Wisconsin and the United States are canceling lower-level games due to lack of officials. When it comes to varsity contests, athletic directors have been forced to move games to different days of the week because of the same shortage.

The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association will be holding district meetings this month. Discussion items will include whether or not baseball should consider moving to five divisions as is the case with softball. Word is coaches are split on the issue with veteran coaches opposed and newer coaches in support.

It was a full house for last Saturday’s Prescott Hall of Fame Banquet. Congratulations to Ryan Berg, Jaci Kosin, and Steve Block on becoming the newest members of a group that is now 17 members strong. Over 120 attended Saturday’s event making it the most well attended Hall of Fame Banquet ever. Hats off to the Student Council for serving the meal, and students Kianna Severson, Jake Garza, and Ashley Keller for providing musical entertainment. Bravo to Prescott Hall of Famer Mike Ptacek and Liz Riley for a wonderful meal and a big thank you to Joy Lutheran Church for donating the use of tables for the event.

Hall of Fame Vice Chair Jeremy Kerg urged people in attendance to nominate deserving individuals for Hall of Fame consideration for induction in 2025. Nomination forms are available on the Prescott School District website.

Headshaker of the week. Yes, yes, yes I understand it is all a marketing thing. But come on. Over the last two weeks the game uniforms worn by the Seattle Mariners and the Colorado Rockies have been nothing short of atrocious. The horrendous apparel is reminiscent of beer league slo-pitch softball uniforms of the 1980’s. While watching highlights of a recent Mariners game with players donning the hideous trappings, I was expecting to see, in true bar league fashion, players guzzle a cup of beer as they reached second base. Long ago, doctors would recommend parents keep syrup of ipecac in their kitchen cupboard to induce vomiting if a child swallowed something poisonous. Today, there is no need for the foul-smelling anecdote. I would have parents print an image of the aforementioned “uniforms'' for they are enough to make anyone who sees them puke. Those uniforms? They are headshakers.
